Radical 69 , meaning " ax , pound ", is one of the 34 traditional radicals in Chinese writing , which consist of four strokes. In Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , it happens very rarely.
The pictogram shows an ax, but actually it is a measure of weight. In the past, the weight on the Chinese barrel weight scales was shaped like an ax.
As a bearer of meaning in the composite sign, 斤 places this in the meaning field ax as in 斧 (= ax), where 斤 functions as meaning and 父 as sound carrier. The left component of the sign 断 (= break) is derived from 绝 (= break off), the ax on the right serves as a bearer of meaning. 斯 (this, this, this) initially meant to separate, hence the ax. 析 (split, separate) is made up of the ax 斤 and the tree 木. Today it can be found in the combination 分析 (= analyze). 所 (= place, place) consists of 户 (= door) and the ax. The message of this combination was: smash a door with an ax (= make a decision). Only later did 所 take on its current meaning.
