Radical 126 , meaning “ and ”, is one of 29 of the 214 traditional radicals in Chinese writing that are written with six strokes. With 5 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are very few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.

The radical and takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals 126. position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Sino-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 169th position.

The character developed from the image of a drooping full beard . More likely it is a man with a beard attached to his chin; the dash is the mouth . The seal script form shows the lower part of a nose (now the upper horizontal line) and including two U-shaped by hanging below whiskers (that is, a Chinese beard, long and thin). The mask was very important in Chinese theater. The spectator of an opera could already recognize the role of the person depicted from the mask. To attach a beard therefore means “recite”.

As a single sign, 而 is used today as a conjunction. The Xiandai Hanyu Cidian (现代 汉语 词典) and the Xinhua dictionary do not use 而 as a radical, it is to be looked up there under the horizontal line 一 (横).
