With 15 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary, there are only a few characters that can be found under this radical in the lexicon.
The radical "Egge" takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals 127. position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the New Chinese-German Dictionary from the People's Republic of China, for example, it is in 176th position.
The character developed from the pictorial representation of a drawbar . The seal lettering -form shows a plow-like agricultural implement.
As a bearer of meaning, 耒 places its symbols in the environment of agricultural implements or the cultivation of fields, as in 耘 (= weeding), 耜 (an ancient agricultural implement), 耧 (= seed drill), 耪 (= loosen the earth with a hoe), 耢 (= agricultural implement to smooth the floor). Only in a few characters, which are also rarely used, does 耒 (lei) function as a sound carrier, for example in 诔 (lei = obituary for a dead person). In the left position, the last line of 耒 (lei), at the bottom right, is to be executed as a point as in 耕 (geng = plant, field).
