Harfleur is a French town with 8449 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Seine-Maritime in the region Normandy .
Geographical location
Harfleur is located in Normandy, about eight kilometers east of Le Havre and not far from where the Seine flows into the English Channel . The rivers Lezarde and Leure converge at Harfleur.
history
The port city of Caracotinum, the most important city of the Caletes , a Belgian tribe whose settlement area was in what is now Normandy between the coast and the river Seine, was found near Harfleur in antiquity .
Until the 15th century, Harfleur with its inland port was of great strategic importance. The port silted up so far in the course of the 15th century that Le Havre was founded as a port city in 1517 and Harfleur overtook the rank.
Harfleur was besieged in 1415 and taken by King Henry V of England . In 1435, the city became French again when, during an uprising against the English, the citizens opened the city gates and expelled the occupiers from the city. Harfleur subsequently came back into English possession until it finally returned to France in 1450.
Town twinning
Harfleur maintains partnerships with the German communities Bramsche in Lower Saxony and Lindow in Brandenburg as well as with the West African community Rollo (Burkina Faso) .
