Departed - Unter Feinden (Original title: The Departed ) is an American thriller directed by Martin Scorsese , which was released on October 6, 2006 in US cinemas. The German film launch took place on December 7, 2006.

The film is a remake of the successful and critically acclaimed Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs .

Unmistakably the film also has some characteristics of film noir , especially in the portrayal of the main characters. Director Scorsese himself said that for him in this film the people and their attitude to life are more in the foreground, since the plot can be transferred to any other culture.

The film was produced by Brad Gray , Graham King and Brad Pitt together with Scorsese, who was enthusiastic about the script and the original film.

action

The film is set in Boston , Massachusetts . Years ago, the brutal boss of the Irish Mafia in the city, Frank Costello, succeeded in smuggling a gang member into the Massachusetts State Police as a mole in the form of the young Colin Sullivan , which is now finally starting its service.

Around the same time, the police cadet Billy Costigan is entrusted with a delicate assignment by Captain Queenan, the head of the undercover division, and his assistant Dignam: Costigan's uncle was a member of the Irish mafia, and because of his family background, they believe Billy has a good chance To infiltrate Costello's organization unnoticed, but Costigan must first go to jail after he has been dismissed from service in a seemingly dishonorable manner. Only the two police officers know Billy's true identity as an undercover police officer - because they rightly suspect that their department has been infiltrated by Costello's organization.

Some time later, Colin Sullivan is a respected police officer in the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and informs Costello of every move the unit makes. Conversely, Costigan has now established a relationship of trust with Costello, even though he has suffered heavily from the stress of his job. Soon, however, everything threatens to fall apart, as both the SIU and Costello's bullies are becoming more aware that there is an informant among their own men. Ironically, the two infiltrators of all people are tasked with finding themselves, so to speak.

Costello also instructs Sullivan to expose the undercover police officer in his organization. The members of Costello's gang are supposed to reveal their social security number so that Sullivan can check it and thus find the informant in Costello's ranks. The numbers, which allow an unambiguous assignment in the USA, are then handed over to Sullivan in an envelope that Costigan has previously labeled Citizens Trust in a porn cinema . Here Costigan makes himself suspicious for the first time, because although he puts his number in the envelope, he does not stay with the team until the numbers are validated as ordered, because instead he tries in vain to find out who the police informant is, who the Envelope is handed over.

With Queenan able to keep the names of his undercover people a secret, he is secretly shadowed by Sullivan's unit, who claims Queenan herself is suspected of being the mole. Shortly before a meeting with Costigan, Queenan is killed at the meeting point by Costello's men, who in vain want to find out the name of his undercover agent from him.

Soon after, Costello's mobsters had a shootout with Sullivan's unit. After Costello's men fled to the headquarters, Costigan's identity as an undercover agent is almost revealed: Delahunt, who was wounded in the shooting, calls Costigan and tells him that when he ordered him to come to the meeting point with Queenan, he accidentally made the wrong one Address, 314 Washington Street, but Costigan had come to the correct one, 344 Washington Street. That was proof that Costigan wanted to meet Queenan. Before Delahunt can say why he was keeping this from the others, he succumbs to his injuries. Thereupon Delahunt is revealed by the police as an alleged undercover agent, whereby the search for the "rat" among Costello's people is stopped.

Dignam - who is now the only one who knows Costigan's true identity - quits his job because he distrusts Sullivan and does not want to reveal any data from the undercover department. Sullivan contacts Costigan via the murdered Queenan's mobile phone , but Costigan does not reveal himself. Sullivan gives his name, claiming he took the case and is now Costigan's senior officer.

When Sullivan discovers that Costello is an FBI informant , he reveals his whereabouts to the head of the SIU, Ellerby. A message from Costigan's cell phone tells the police the exact whereabouts of Costello, who is picking up a delivery of drugs with his men in an old warehouse. During the operation, most of Costello's companions are killed, apart from Costigan, who knew about the trap. Costello himself is wounded and is initially able to escape. He meets Sullivan, who now wants to know whether he has given his name to the FBI, which the FBI denies. When Costello, who sees himself betrayed, draws his weapon, Sullivan kills him fatally with several shots.

Costigan then returns to the police and actually wants to get out when he accidentally discovers the envelope with the words Citizen Trust in the office of his supposedly new contact Sullivan and realizes that Sullivan is the mole. When Sullivan wants to pay out Costigan, Costigan has already fled. Sullivan realizes that Costigan has looked through him and then deletes all master data from Costigan's personnel file from the database to prevent internal investigations from finding evidence of Costigan's activity as an undercover police officer. The two people who knew about his job are either dead or no longer on duty.

Costigan hands psychiatrist Madolyn an envelope containing evidence of Sullivan's crimes. Madolyn lives with Sullivan, but also had a brief, secret relationship with Costigan, whereby neither she nor the two men is aware that there is a connection between Costigan and Sullivan. Costigan now asks to meet Sullivan, against whom he has evidence in the form of Costello's notes, in order to arrest him. Madolyn learns that Sullivan has been working for the Irish Mafia the whole time and turns away from him.

Sullivan's arrest seems to be successful at first. Costigan has asked Brown - an old friend from the Police Academy (the two are talking during a running session at the beginning of the film) - for help without realizing that Barrigan, who was also smuggled into the police by the Irish gang, is already waiting on the ground floor was. Costigan was shot by him when the elevator door opened, and a little later, Brown, who had arrived, was shot. Barrigan in turn is killed as a scapegoat by Sullivan with a headshot.

Sullivan posthumously suggests Costigan for the highest civilian award ( Medal for Merit ) during his questioning about the incidents . At his funeral, he notices a Madolyn in tears. After the funeral he wants to speak to her and asks her how her baby, whose father could theoretically also be a Costigan, is completely ignored by her.

When Sullivan comes home one day, Dignam is waiting for him there and shoots him without a word. The same milk can be seen in his paper bag as at the beginning of the film, and one sees a rat (in English slang rat means a traitor) running along the balcony railing, in the background the Massachusetts State House, which appears several times in the film . The circle has come full.

background

The filming of the film with a budget of about 90 million US dollars began on April 25, 2005 in Quincy , Charlestown and Boston, among others . Further recordings were made in White Plains and New York . They ended on September 15, 2005.

Even if Departed - Unter Feinden largely follows the plot of Infernal Affairs - but with different accents - the endings differ from one another, since in the original the corrupt policeman survives while Sullivan is shot in Departed . The role of the psychiatrist (Madolyn) has also been upgraded, since in Infernal Affairs the undercover policeman Yan falls in love with his psychiatrist, but his opponent Ming has his own girlfriend.

Departed was 2007's most successful Scorsese film to date. He grossed a good 289 million US dollars worldwide, only Shutter Island in 2010 exceeded this record.

The character portrayed by Jack Nicholson is named after the New York gang boss Frank Costello of the 1930s. The template for Nicholson's role, however, was the gang boss James J. Bulger . For years there was conflict between the Irish mafia from Boston and the Italian mafia from Providence (represented by the Patriarca family ). This is also indicated in Departed.

The film is processed in the Simpsons episode Debarted - Among Rats (season 19, episode 13).

music

The composer Howard Shore was responsible for the film music . The official album The Departed was released in October 2006. The film starts with " Gimme Shelter " by the Rolling Stones . This is followed by the title track, a mixture of Irish folk music and hardcore punk , played by the American Irish folk punk band Dropkick Murphys called I'm Shipping Up to Boston . The choice of this song was made consciously because the film is about the Irish Mafia. There is also a live version of “ Comfortably Numb ” sung by Van Morrison , Roger Waters and The Band . This version is from The Wall concert in 1990 on Potsdamer Platz and is originally from Pink Floyd .

In addition to "Gimme Shelter" there are other songs that appear in the film, but cannot be found on the film soundtrack. These are, for example, “Thief's Theme” by Nas or “Well Well Well” by John Lennon . In the second half of the film, the famous sextet “Chi mi frena in tal momento” from the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti can be heard over and over again, and towards the end, when everything begins to dissolve and unmask, the threatening sounds can be heard dark end of the plot anticipating opening bars of this opera. After Costello's death, the melody of this sextet rings again as his cell phone rings. In addition, at Costigan's funeral, the hymnGoing Home ”, which is based on the second movement ( Legend ) of the 9th Symphony by Antonín Dvořák , will be played by bagpipes .

criticism

“The ruthlessness with which Scorsese incorporates the borrowed material into his own cosmos of thought sometimes has something curious about it, but also the ease of an age style that no longer has the patience for cumbersome deductions. […] Basically, Scorsese treats his Chinese model as modern poets have treated the classics: as something distant, but eternally valid, which from time to time has to be rewritten in a modern way so that we can understand the message again. "

- Jens Jessen: Spy in Hell in Time

“Ten years after Casino , Martin Scorsese is returning to the genre of gangster films. He moved the Hong Kong model to the Irish Catholic gang in Boston, cast it with top-class cast and peppered it with quotes from John Ford's The Traitor to The Third Man . Despite all the familiar virtuosity, the film does not turn out to be an affair of the heart of the director. "

“In Departed , all the ingredients that make a Scorsese film are finally united again: excellent performance, dynamic image creation [...] and a story about lies, corruption and intrigue, told with pessimistic furore. Beneath its surface, the film is a metaphor for the current state of American society. [...] Conclusion: [...] A bloody, cynical, extremely gripping gangster epic with a finale that runs amok. "

“Remake of the Hong Kong thriller 'Infernal Affairs' 2002, whose heavy-blooded, sometimes quite violent staging shows a world in which the boundaries between good and bad are abolished. The brilliant film is captivating and intense, but also shows a certain narrative impatience on the part of its director, who is not very interested in a logical resolution, so that the staged grimness and anger leaves an aftertaste. "
