The 1971/72 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 14th season of the highest German ice hockey league . The German champions were the Düsseldorfer EG , which celebrated their second title win. The defending champion EV Füssen finished the season in second place.
Since the former champions Preussen Krefeld withdrew from the league for financial reasons before the start of the season, the game started with only nine teams this year. With the record champions Berliner SC and the second division, EV Rosenheim , two clubs rose to the Bundesliga after the season.

mode
As in the previous year, the teams played the German champions in a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams. The last placed should actually have been relegated to the league at the end of the season .
Due to the withdrawal of the Preussen Krefeld before the season it was unclear whether the 9th, the Krefeld EV should now relegate and there would be two promoted from the league. In the end, the German Ice Hockey Association decided that the Krefelder EV would not have to relegate and that the runner-up in the Oberliga, SB DJK Rosenheim, would play the league with eleven teams for one season.
