The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1978/79 season was the 14th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition was held from September 1978 to August 29, 1979. A total of 19 teams from 19 nations took part. The 14th European Cup winner was the Soviet team from CSKA Moscow , which prevailed in the final tournament against Poldi SONP Kladno , Ässät Pori and the Skellefteå AIK .

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1977/78 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The tournament was played in a knockout system with two games per round. One leg and one second leg were played. The team that won more games advanced to the next round. If necessary, an additional penalty shootout was carried out to determine the winner of the round.

The SC Riessersee received a bye for the first round, while Ässät Pori and the Skellefteå AIK were directly qualified for the fourth round. The two finalists of the European Cup 1977/78 , Poldi SONP Kladno and CSKA Moscow , were set for the final tournament.

3rd round

The third round games were played in December 1978 and January 1979. The four winners of the second round played the two qualifiers for the fourth round.

Due to financial difficulties, ATSE Graz decided not to participate in the fourth round of the cup competition.

Final tournament

The final tournament was from 26 to 29 August 1979 in the Austrian Innsbruck discharged. The games took place in the 7,800-seat Olympic Hall .

The game between CSKA Moscow and Poldi SONP Kladno was also the final of last year's tournament .
