Euphoria is an American television series on the pay TV channel HBO . The first broadcast took place on June 16, 2019 on HBO, in Germany on October 16, 2019 on Sky Atlantic . It is based on an Israeli mini-series of the same name that was produced from 2012 to 2013. In early July 2019, HBO announced it had renewed the series for a second season.

The showrunner , screenwriter and director of the series is Sam Levinson . Jennifer Morrison , Pippa Bianco and Augustine Frizzell also directed one episode each . In addition to Levinson, u. a. Ron Leshem , who created the Israeli template, and musician Drake executive producer of the series.

Euphoria is about a group of high school students around the drug addict 17-year-old Rue Bennett (played by Zendaya ), who meets and becomes friends with the new student Jules Vaughn ( Hunter Schafer ) after her withdrawal . The series focuses on the themes of friendship , sexuality , identity , trauma , drugs and love of the predominantly underage characters.

action

17 year old Rue Bennett is in high school and a drug addict . After an overdose , she was in a coma for several days , which is why she began withdrawal a short time later. Nevertheless, she cannot get rid of intoxicants. She gets her drugs from the dealer Fezco, who is on good terms with her. It is suggested several times that she suffers from depression , panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Rue's father died of cancer when she was 13 years old. Around the same time, Rue began using psychotropic substances . She feels responsible to her younger sister Gia. She also basically has a good relationship with her mother Leslie. Although she is understanding and caring, she always fears that her daughter could suffer a relapse and therefore does not trust her, which strains the relationship between the two and often leads to arguments.

At a party, Rue meets Jules Vaughn, who is of the same age, with whom she immediately becomes friends. Jules moved out of town with her father after her parents divorced and entered high school. She is transgender and bisexual . At the age of 11, on the advice of her mother, Jules was admitted to a psychiatric hospital against her will due to gender dysphoria and self- harm. Jules often meets with men who are usually significantly older than her. Among them is Cal Jacobs, a married man who is well respected as a successful local businessman. After Jules lies to him about being a minor, they have sex , which Jules finds painful and humiliating. She then heads to Christopher McKay's party, a well-known college football player, where she meets Rue.

Rue soon falls in love with Jules, although it is not clear at first whether these feelings are also mutual. Jules initially falls on the dating - app Grindr into a boy names Tylor. It soon turns out, however, that this is actually Nate Jacobs, the son of Cal. Nate blackmailed Jules with the threat of a display of the distribution of child pornography after they had sent to him by nude pictures. He demands of her to keep silent about her meeting with his father Cal and later also forces her to make false statements to the police. A little later, Rue and Jules become a couple after Jules realizes that she doesn't need male approval to be a woman. Jules is initially the main reason Rue stays clean for several months after continuing to use drugs shortly after she was withdrawn. But the blackmail by Nate (knows nothing about the rue), the fact that Jules falls in love with Anna after a weekend trip to an old school friend and that she still has feelings for Nate's persona Tylor (and possibly Nate himself) weigh on them Relationship from Rue's point of view. When Rue comes up with the idea of running away with Jules and leaving town on the day of the winter ball, Jules enthusiastically agrees. Plagued by doubts, Rue takes her to the train station, but cannot bring herself to follow Jules onto the train. In tears she lets Jules drive away on the train and has a violent relapse as a result.

In addition to Rue and Jules, the series also focuses on the everyday (school) life of other characters. Lexi Howard has been Rue's best friend since kindergarten, but the two have grown apart over the years. Her sister Cassie has had a number of partners in the past, which is why she doesn't have a particularly good reputation in school. Cassie's friend Christopher McKay was brought up very strictly by his father and looks like a typical jock . Her classmate Kat Hernandez had problems with her figure for a long time, until she realized that she looks attractive to men because of her curves. She also regularly writes successful fan fiction in the field of BDSM . Her best friend Maddy is with Nate Jacobs, whose aggression problems try to suppress his insecurity about his sexual identity and possible homosexuality . This relationship is not very happy because they cheat on each other and Maddy is strangled by him once in an argument.

production

Project development and pre-production

The Pay TV transmitter HBO confirmed on 1 June 2017 that in cooperation with the Film Studio A24 Television adaptation of the Israeli miniseries Euphoria (2012-2013) by Ron Leshem , Daphna Levin and Tmira Yardenivon was planned under the same name. The American film director and screenwriter Sam Levinson was hired as the showrunner . The son of film director Barry Levinson was best known for directing and writing the films Another Happy Day (2011) and Assassination Nation (2018), but was previously not involved in any series production. A variety of people were involved as executive producers , including Levinson, the musicians Drake and Future the Prince , the creators of the template Leshem, Levin and Yardeni as well as Lauren Santos, Ravi Nandan, Kevin Turen, Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein, Mirit Toovi, Yoram Mokadi and Gary Lennon. The script is also from Levinson, who also incorporated his own experiences with drug addiction, depression and fears from his youth. Levinson also drew inspiration from the films Magnolia , Boogie Nights , One with a Heart , The Passion of the Maid of Orléans and Welcome to Life .

Levinson is the main director of Euphoria for five episodes . Jennifer Morrison and Pippa Bianco also directed one episode each of the first season . Augustine Frizzell directed the pilot episode announced by HBO on March 13, 2018. In late July 2018, HBO announced that they had ordered a first season with a total of eight episodes. Shortly after the first season was released, HBO extended Euphoria for a second season. The pre-production of this was completed in March 2020 so that the shooting was imminent. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to be postponed for an indefinite period. Due to the delay, the release of the second season is not planned for 2021 at the earliest.

For the main character Rue, the American actress and singer Zendaya was cast, who became known as a child actress in the Disney series Shake It Up - Tanzen ist alles (2010-2013) and KC Undercover (2015-2018), but most recently also in major Hollywood films such as Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Greatest Showman (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). Many of the actors selected alongside her were previously largely unknown. For the role Jules was, for example, LGBT - activist and model Hunter Schafer selected for Angus Cloud (who plays the drug dealer Fezco) and Barbie Ferreira , previously only a small cameo in the HBO series Divorce had is Euphoria , the acting debut as supporting actors. Other leading actors are Maude Apatow , Eric Dane , Alexa Demie , Jacob Elordi , Storm Reid , Algee Smith , Sydney Sweeney and Nika King . For the second season, an open casting was held for at least four new characters . Kelvin Harrison Jr. will join the ensemble from season two.

Filming

The cameramen Marcell Rév , Drew Daniels , Adam Newport-Berra and André Chemetoff were responsible for filming the first season . Most of the shooting took place in the south of the US state of California . Original sites were about the Del Amo Fashion Center and other places in Torrance and Los Angeles- -Stadtteile Sherman Oaks and Valley Glen , where it was filmed at the Ulysses S. Grant High School. Most of the scenes were filmed at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City . A large part of the series was created there on specially built sets , including the entire fairground from the third episode. For this, more than 700 storyboards were initially designed and these were recreated in the studio on an area of around 10,000 km² with rides from California and Arizona . Filming there lasted six days. For a scene in which Rue takes drugs and then the house apparently revolves around her, the entire corridor was built on a kind of cardanic suspension . This rotates continuously around her, while Rue can walk from the floor to the wall and finally to the ceiling and back again, followed by the static camera. Christopher Nolan used a very similar effect for a dream sequence in a hotel in his film Inception . In contrast to this scene, Euphoria's sequence also had numerous extras in the room, which were attached to the floor with ropes, so that these in the background are apparently unaffected by the rotating room.

The romantic scenes and especially the sex scenes were staged with Intimacy Coordinator Amanda Blumenthal. During the filming, Levinson placed particular emphasis on portraying the characters' drug use realistically, but not glorifying or glossing over the drug use or the consequences. While characters usually look the same, the make-up of most characters in Euphoria differs from scene to scene, which is why make-up artist Doniella Davy created hundreds of designs. Many of them were initiated directly by Levinson, who wanted to use the make-up of the figures not only to individualize the figures himself. They should also convey their respective mood and emotional development.

The shooting of the second season planned for the second quarter of 2020 was postponed indefinitely a few days before the start of shooting due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack comes from the British singer , R & B - musician and music producer Labrinth . Levinson contacted him while he was working on his second album Imagination & the Misfit Kid . Labrinth wrote and produced the soundtrack both before, during and after filming. In the course of the first season, parts of the song All for Us , written by Labrinth for the series, are used and hinted at, but it is only played in full and shown with a choreography in the last scene of the season finale . The song was sung by the main actress Zendaya. In addition, numerous other songs - sometimes over 20 per episode - by other artists are used in each episode, mostly from the genres hip-hop , indie rock , trap , R&B and doo wop . The songs were selected by Jen Malone and Adam Leber , who were recognized by the Guild Of Music Supervisors in 2020 for the best music selection in a drama series. A first playlist with a large number of songs was created in September 2018, the final list of performers was approved in May 2019, just under a month before the first episode was broadcast, with the contractual consent of almost 350 different parties being required. Some copyright holders have banned their songs from being used because of the explicit scenes in which they should have been used. Well-known artists who appear in the first season are Beyoncé , Billie Eilish , Migos , BTS , Fiona Apple , Lizzo , ASAP Ferg , Skrillex , Randy Newman , Bobby Womack , Agnes Obel , Lil Wayne , Drake and Madonna . The entire soundtrack of the first season includes 160 songs.

The original Labrinth soundtrack was released as an album on October 4, 2019 and comprises 26 songs with a running time of just over an hour.

publication

Euphoria had its initial release on June 16, 2019 on HBO . Another episode was then broadcast weekly. The finale of the first season ran on August 4, 2019. In Germany, the first season ran from October 16, 2019 on Sky Atlantic , with two episodes being broadcast every week until the finale on November 6.

The series was received positively overall. On the IMDb film database , the series received a rating of 8.4 / 10 from a total of over 46,000 audience ratings. On Rotten Tomatoes , the first season received a critical rating of 82% and an audience rating of 84%. At Metacritic , the average value of 68 (critic) and 84 (spectators) gave 100 for the series. Most critics praised the series for its realistic and adult portrayal of the subjects covered and the acting, particularly the leading actress Zendaya and the acting debut of Hunter Schafer .

Tim Goodman highlighted the work of series creator Sam Levinson in his review for The Hollywood Reporter . "Levinson steers steadfastly into what will make many adults, especially parents, sit up and take notice (and possibly upset), while most teenagers will likely agree that it is one of the few accurate visual interpretations of their lives." He also praised the acting von Zendaya as "an absolute revelation", Hunter Schafers work in her acting debut he described as "similarly fantastic, groundbreaking achievement". For The Washington Post , Hank Stuever described Euphoria as "beautifully shot and artistically appealing", but also as "unsettling and unnecessarily cruel". "Juggling storylines leads to scenes being constantly cut off before they can pick up speed," said Mike Hale for The New York Times . Levinson created characters who are more than just carriers of social problems, but he has too many of them in too many storylines. Benjamin Lee, on the other hand, credited the series in his review for The Guardian with the fact that it succeeded in balancing the serious issues and moments of shock with a surprising sensitivity. Lee drew a comparison to the Netflix series Dead Girls Don't Lie , whereby Euphoria, in contrast to her, managed to treat the lives of the teenage characters unfiltered and yet cautiously and with more in the back of her mind than just sparking controversy. Lena Mändlen was of the same opinion for the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Euphoria addresses similar problems, but does "exactly the right thing that dead girls do not lie wrong: she deals with psychological problems realistically". The portrayal of the characters' sensitive social problems is often explicit, but never glorifying . Daniel Gerhardt described Euphoria as “the teenage drama of the year”, which raised the whole genre to new levels of generosity, violence, visual and narrative radiance. The HBO series is "also the most visually stunning representation of the current American opioid crisis, " he continued for Zeit Online . For Gerhardt, Euphoria is less a settlement with Generation Z , as Arielle Bernstein described in The Guardian , but rather "with those adults who have released their children into a world full of cynicism". Oliver Junge also praised the series for the realistic depiction of the young characters and described Euphoria for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as a “psychologically intelligent in-depth analysis of pubertal loneliness and rebellion in the universally interconnected digital age”.
