FDGB Cup 1952/54
With the FDGB soccer cup competition 1952/54 a cup winner was determined for the fourth time in the GDR .
The fourth cup competition followed on from the 1952/53 cup season, which was canceled after two qualifying rounds and the first main round in June 1953 because of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 . The competition began with 84 teams from the district leagues and district classes of the 15 GDR districts . After two qualifying rounds, the 1st main round was held on June 7, 1953 with 64 teams. Among them were the remaining 21 district representatives, plus the 26 teams from the second-rate GDR league and the 17 teams from the GDR upper league . In the spring of 1954, the 2nd main round, which had already been drawn in 1953, was drawn again and held on April 25, 1954.
In the round of 16, 13 of the league teams had already been eliminated, with Chemie Apolda and activist Welzow two district league teams were still represented, but this was the end of the line. Surprisingly, with Empor Wurzen-West , Chemie Zeitz and Vorwärts Berlin, three second division teams were among the last four. The Berlin army footballers, who had already been promoted, and the upper division Motor Zwickau finally reached the final.

Course of the game
In the duel between the upper division Motor Zwickau and the second division ZSK Vorwärts Berlin, the army footballers surprisingly prevailed. However, the Berliners with their three national players Eilitz, Scherbaum and Fröhlich had already proven their qualities with a sovereign rise in the league in the past season of the GDR league, so the Zwickauers should have been warned. However, they got into the hindquarters through an early goal by the Berlin veteran Rudolf Mitzschke, while the quick leadership of the forward team gave security within their own ranks. This was not shaken by the Zwickau equalizer ten minutes later by 20-year-old Werner Baumann. Even in the second half, the Zwickau could not live up to their role as favorites. Against the attentive Berlin defense, in which Eilitz was another future national player with Marotzke, the West Saxons failed to score another goal. The goal to win the cup was again achieved by a Berlin veteran. The 28-year-old Heinz Fröhlich converted a foul penalty eleven minutes before the end.
