This article describes the court organization in the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg and in the Free State of Saxony-Altenburg .
From the foundation in 1826 to 1879
The initial instance was the ducal justice offices, the ducal city court Altenburg, the city councils, the city court Eisenberg, a number of patrimonial courts (in 1831 there were 133) and a number of foreign courts that were also responsible for the respective "Altenburg portion". The second instance was the judicial college of the ducal government. The last instance was the joint higher appeal court in Jena .
In addition, there were privileged places of jurisdiction for individual groups of people . Which was the consistory Altenburg for the clergy (the consistory was also general court in matrimonial matters), the military court of the Duchy of Altenburg for military personnel and the court marshal -Amt for court employees.
The judicial offices were part of the offices. There was no separation of jurisdiction from administration .

From the foundation in 1879 to 1918
As part of the introduction of the Reich Justice Laws , the Jena Higher Appeal Court was converted into the Jena Higher Regional Court and the Altenburg Court of Appeal into the Altenburg Regional Court . 6 local courts were located there.
