The municipality Gurdschaani ( Georgian გურჯაანის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Gurdschaanis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia .
geography
The administrative center of Gurdschaani Municipality is the small town of Gurdschaani . The municipality, which covers an area of 846 km², is bounded by five municipalities that also belong to the Kakheti region: in the west of Sagaredscho , in the northwest of Telavi , in the northeast of Qvareli , in the east of Lagodechi and in the southeast and south of Sighnaghi .
The northeastern part of the municipality with most of the larger towns is located in the area of the southwestern flank of the Alasani basin ; the eponymous river Alasani marks the north-eastern border of the municipality. The Gombori ridge extends through the middle part , which - in contrast to its higher part further to the northwest - has the character of a wooded low mountain range , with the 1332 m high Tba-Zweri as the highest peak. At the southwestern foot of the ridge there are also a number of villages before the arid and sparsely populated Iori highlands begin, which occupies the southwestern part of the municipality up to the Iori River .
Population and administrative division
The municipality has 54,337 inhabitants (2014); this is about a quarter less than in the previous census in 2002 (72,618).
