In the late summer of 1994, the Accent was launched on the German market as the successor to the Pony . It was the first completely independently developed model of the manufacturer and did not take over any elements of the predecessor.
The reason for the redevelopment of the floor pan, chassis and body were the rapidly falling sales of the predecessor in the USA, which Hyundai attributed to quality problems. The project management was therefore changed so that a vehicle developer was now in charge of the project, who was also given budgetary competencies.
The development took a total of 52 months, cost 430 million US dollars and ended with the market launch in April 1994.
Furnishing
There were different equipment such as LS, GS, GLS and GT. The LS variant was the basic model with manual window regulators, mechanical adjustment of heating / ventilation (the higher equipment variants had vacuum-controlled adjustment) and the driver's seat without height adjustment.
The GT version was only available with the 1.5 liter engine with 73 kW (99 PS). It was also the top equipment. It included a tighter suspension setup, 14-inch alloy wheels, ABS, rear spoiler, fog lights, air conditioning and a music system with 4 speakers. In the smaller equipment parts of this package were included or optionally available such as B. the air conditioning. Special models followed later ("Cool & Comfort", "Live" etc.).
On the safety side, a driver airbag was standard from the market launch , and from September 1995 also a passenger airbag. From April 1998 the standard equipment also included the ABS .
In February 1997 a facelift was carried out on the Accent in South Korea, which was only carried out in Europe in April 1998. It is visually recognizable by the white-colored, horizontally arranged turn signals at the rear as well as modified front and rear aprons.
Between 2002 and 2006, the first generation also had a Venezuelan sister model called the Dodge Brisa .
Engines
The engines have all been certified to Euro 2 since September 1996, the 1.5 L was not before. Before the facelift in 1997, the 1.5 L was also available with a 4-stage automatic, after the facelift this option changed to the 1.3 L engine. The table only contains information on the manual transmission.

The second generation of the Accent, presented in January 2000, was positioned half a class larger in the compact car segment. For the first time the Accent was available with a diesel engine (three-cylinder common rail from VM Motori).
In Germany only the three- and five-door hatchback variants were officially imported. The four-door notchback models of the first version nevertheless reached Germany in not inconsiderable numbers as an EU import from southern Europe.
In February 2003 there was a model upgrade ( LC2 ), which came up with standard equipment that was unusual in this class, a diesel and a cleaner gasoline engine.
In mid-2005, production of the Accent was initially discontinued and no new model of the same name followed for the time being. In Russia, however, the production of the Hyundai Accent was only started by TagAZ in 2005 and has been in production there almost unchanged since then. However, this is the first version from the beginning of 2000 to the beginning of 2003.
In Mexico and Venezuela, the Accent LC was assembled under the name Dodge Verna .
Furnishing
On the safety side, all German models had two front and side airbags and ABS . A subframe carries the engine, the steering gear and the front wishbones. This improves passive safety and, thanks to the decoupling of the stool via rubber elements, contributes to a low noise level. The chassis has a multi-link rear axle .
From the middle equipment GS onwards, a driver's seat with two height adjustments and lumbar support as well as electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, which is worth mentioning for this class, was included. With the 2003 facelift, an air conditioning system, a previously unavailable radio remote control, an on-board computer with range, outside temperature and average consumption display as well as a fully-fledged three-point belt for the middle seat of the rear bench were added as standard. Automatic door unlocking in the event of accidents supplemented the safety equipment. For this purpose, the braking system has also been strengthened and the steering and chassis have been adjusted to be more precise.

For the World Rally Championship season 2000 , Hyundai developed the Hyundai Accent WRC based on the new generation . According to the regulations, the rally vehicle had a water-cooled 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with turbocharging, which produced around 300 hp and 520 Nm. The debut took place at the second championship round at the Rally Sweden in February 2000. The Hyundai World Rally Team achieved its first special stage victory in July of the same year on SS18 of the Rally New Zealand - Te Akau South . The best overall placement in Hyundai's debut season was achieved with 4th place in the penultimate round, the Rally Australia . At the end of the season, the Hyundai World Rally Team did not get more than 8 points and came in sixth of seven places in the team classification - tied with the last-placed team, Škoda Motorsport . The only Hyundai driver with points in the drivers' standings was the Swede Kenneth Eriksson with 5 points. The two other drivers Alister McRae and Michael Guest were unsuccessful. In the 2001 WRC season , Hyundai was able to repeat the best result of the previous year with a 4th place at the Rally Great Britain , which also saw the second and last special stage victory of the year. At the end of the season the Hyundai WRT was again in 6th place in the manufacturers' championship with 17 points. In the 2002 World Rally Championship , Hyundai took part in every round of the season for the first time, achieved three special stage victories, a top 5th place in the New Zealand Rally and, at the end of the year, finished 4th in the manufacturers' championship with eight points - one point ahead of both of them Chasing Škoda Motorsport and Mitsubishi Ralliart . The following year, the Hyundai World Rally Team withdrew from the World Rally Championship during the current season after the tenth run in a row of unresolved contractual disputes with the Hyundai Motor Corporation .
Of the 25 built chassis of the Accent WRC, some are still used in selected national rallies by private teams. Various Accent WRCs achieved a total of 101 overall victories in various rally events apart from the world championship between 2001 and 2015.
The vehicle is featured in the Richard Burns Rally and V-Rally 3 video games , as well as in several titles in the Gran Turismo and World Rally Championship series .

Euro NCAP - Crash Test | not tested, see Kia Rio |
US NCAP - Crash Test |
At the Geneva Motor Show 2006 , the third generation Accent series vehicle with the internal abbreviation MC was presented.
The car, which is available as a three-door and not in all countries as a notchback sedan , was developed together with Kia Motors and is technically based on a shared platform with the Rio . With dimensions of 4 to 4.3 meters, this generation is positioned between the Getz small car and the i30 compact vehicle , which again means that it cannot be clearly assigned to one or the other vehicle class.
The Accent MC came to Europe from two different plants. The hatchback was from Ulsan ( South Korea imported), while the sedan from the Hyundai plant in Izmit in Turkey was delivered. North America is supplied entirely from Ulsan.
Beijing Hyundai produces for the Chinese market in the capital there. The Mexican Dodge plant in Chihuahua produces the Accent under license as Dodge Attitude . In other countries, the Accent is also known as the Hyundai Verna .
In mid-2010 the Accent was given a slight facelift for certain markets such as China and India. This affected the aprons, the rear and the front. As before, it is available as a hatchback and notchback version. In 2012 it was also replaced in these countries by the newer generation that had been sold elsewhere since 2010.
Accent SR
The design of the three-door hatchback was based on the Hyundai Accent SR concept vehicle , which was presented at the 2005 IAA . The study was designed in the Korean design center in Namyang and, in addition to sporty elements such as spoilers and 18-inch wheels with tire pressure monitoring, has a lowered body and a twin-pipe exhaust system, an electronic stability program (ESP), electric power steering, leather seats and an extensive airbag system. The study is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine.
Later, the name Accent SR was used for a sporty equipment variant of the production model.
Furnishing
The series model was offered until autumn 2009 in Europe as a "gap filler" for the Hyundai Elantra, which was withdrawn from this market in 2006 . It should bridge the time until the appearance of the Hyundai i30 . There is no direct successor model here, but the Kia Rio, which is technically almost identical, is still offered . The Accent offered active headrests at the front, ABS and six airbags as standard. The basic GL equipment , which was only available in conjunction with the 1.4-liter engine, also included air conditioning, electric windows and exterior mirrors, as well as fog lights and central locking. The higher-quality GLS equipment included an on-board computer (display of outside temperature, average consumption, range and daily kilometers), a rear center armrest and a remote control for the central locking. An ESP with traction control , a sliding glass roof, the automatic transmission or a comfort package were available as options. The latter included, among other things, an automatic climate control, leather controls, a front armrest and metal decor on the center console. Regardless of the equipment, the trunk volume is 270 to 1100 liters as a three-door model and 390 liters as a notchback.
reliability
After initial problems with the automatic (model year 2006), the reliability of the drive train reached an average level. In addition to engine and transmission problems, all abnormal noises from the drive as well as pulling in one direction while driving and braking maneuvers were queried here. The reason for complaints in the 2007 model year was the 1.6 L engine with sometimes irregular idling in the cold start phase, which was rectified by software updates. Some drivers complained about a creaking clutch noise (up to year of construction 2009), which was remedied by installing an improved release lever joint and relubricating it. Occasionally, loose dust caps on the shock absorber caused sporadic clacking noises due to their movement, which were remedied by re-gluing or replacing the caps. The durability of the paintwork and interior in terms of crackling and loose parts was rated by the drivers as above average, and the reliability of the on-board electronics as one of the best on the market.
Engines
The range of engines also includes two gasoline engines and a common rail diesel engine without a particulate filter, all of which meet the Euro 4 standard and were tied to the two equipment versions:

In November 2010, sales of the fourth generation of Accent began in Korea. The model takes up the Fluidic Sculpture design language of the Sonata YF and, like its predecessors, is available as a hatchback and notchback. In China, the Hyundai Verna ( RC ) appeared at the same time, an almost identical vehicle with a more subtle front design, which, according to the manufacturer, was developed exclusively for this market.
The fourth generation weighs over 100 kg less and shares the new platform with the Kia Rio , which, unlike the Accent, is also available in Europe. In Russia the vehicle is produced and sold as Solaris .
With this platform generation, a sporty offshoot was added - the Hyundai Veloster - from which the chassis benefits, which is praised in comparison to the Elantra .
For the first time, the range of equipment includes parking sensors and a keyless entry system that opens the doors when the vehicle is approached.
Engines
The range of engines includes four gasoline engines and two common rail diesel engines, although the availability of the individual engines may vary from country to country.
