As early as 1968, Hoffmann played his first Olympic Games at the age of 12 . After he narrowly missed a medal in 1971 with a fourth place at the World Championship and the European Championship and was sixth the following year at his second Olympic Games and the World Championship , he won his first major international medals in 1973 with the bronze medals at the World Championship and the European Championship . In 1974 he finally became world and European champion for the first time , but then had a small career break as a result of meniscus surgery and was out for the entire 1975 season. At his third Olympic Games , he narrowly and controversially missed a medal with his fourth place in 1976. From 1977 to 1979 he was European champion and vice-world champion in 1977 and 1978 , behind Vladimir Kowaljow and Charles Tickner . In 1980, at the end of his career, he became Vice European Champion and Olympic silver medalist behind Robin Cousins . He was also the flag bearer of the GDR delegation at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games . He brought Cousins but in the same year at the world championship defeat and secured his second world championship title. Hoffmann ended his career as a nine-time GDR champion, four-time European champion and two-time world champion. Jan Hoffmann studied medicine after his figure skating rink and is now a specialist in orthopedics in Radeberg near Dresden. He remained in figure skating as an international judge and was also temporarily a member of the board of the German Ice Skating Union . He is married for the second time and has two daughters.
