Joe Jackson Gibbs (born November 25, 1940 in Mocksville , North Carolina ) is an American, former American football coach and currently team owner of a NASCAR team.

Sporting activity

National Football League

From 1973 to 1977 Gibbs was offensive backfield coach with the St. Louis Cardinals , in 1978 he was offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , 1979 and 1980 offensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers . Under Head Coach Don Coryell Gibbs got to know his innovative, " Air Coryell " attack tactics.

From 1981 to 1992 he was Head Coach for the Washington Redskins . During this time, his team won the Super Bowl of the National Football League (NFL) three times . The cornerstone of his success comes from a strong offensive line , which was called "The Hogs" because of its dominance on the line of scrimmage . With the Hogs and the powerful running back John Riggins he drove an effective smashmouth offense , and when the opponent blocked the path, he let his quarterbacks take long, Air-Coryell-like throws on the fast wide receivers Art Monk and Ricky Sanders . During his time with the Redskins, Gibbs made known the use of a so-called H-Back ( hybrid back ). This is comparable to that of a tight end and is usually played by such, but is set up a little behind the line of scrimmage in order to protect the quarterback from oncoming opponents.

Gibbs was considered a shrewd offensive strategist and was Super Bowl winner with three different quarterbacks ( Joe Theismann , Doug Williams and Mark Rypien ). To date, Joe Gibbs is the only football coach who managed to win the Super Bowl with the same team and three different quarterbacks. In 1994 Gibbs was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame . Returning to the Washington Redskins as Head Coach in 2004, he became the only active Head Coach to have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. In January 2008, however, he resigned because of the loss suffered in the playoffs to the Seattle Seahawks .

NASCAR

Gibbs founded his own NASCAR team in 1991 with Joe Gibbs Racing . It currently represents 4 cars each in the NASCAR Sprint Cup (highest class) and in the Xfinity Series (2nd class). In total, its drivers have won 5 titles in the history of the team, 4 of them in the Sprint Cup and one in the Xfinity Series.
