Location of Kley in Dortmund

Kley is the statistical district 72 and at the same time a western part of the city of Dortmund . It belongs to the district of Lütgendortmund .

Kley is first mentioned in 1150 as Cleige. The district goes back to a Westphalian farming village, which was urbanized in the course of industrialization by the neighboring Oespel and Borussia collieries .

Kley was incorporated on April 1, 1928.

A famous son of the village of Kley is Wilhelm Tönnis , the nestor of neurosurgery, who was born as a scion of the old Kleyer farming family Tönnis on the Tönnishof in Kley, which has existed since around 1600 and was buried in the Oespeler cemetery. The neoclassical rural mansion of the Tönnis family, built in 1884, now serves as the headquarters of the internationally known architects Gerber und Partner.

For decades, Kley was Albert Schulze-Vellinghausen's home .
