Art in public space in Stuttgart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Red tree by Mariella Mosler.

The list of art in public space in Stuttgart is dedicated to works of art in Stuttgart that are publicly accessible, even if they are on private land.

From 1983 to 1993 the city of Stuttgart organized the exhibition series “Plastic in the open”. At the exhibitions, works by 5 to 8 sculptors were set up in the city districts each year, around 70% of which were purchased by the city (see exhibition series “Plastic in the open” ). In 1993 this measure to promote young sculptors and popularize contemporary art was canceled without replacement.

Exhibition series "Plastic in the open air"

Federal Garden Show 1977

The accompanying exhibition “Art in the Cityscape - Stuttgart 1977” took place at the 1977 Federal Garden Show in Stuttgart. Works by 23 sculptors were exhibited in the palace garden, on the palace square and in Königstraße. “Unfortunately, there was a large number of damage caused by vandalism”. For this reason, the city took a “pause for several years” in its efforts to present contemporary art to the public.

Exhibition series

In 1982 the city launched the exhibition series “Plastic in the open”. To promote sculptors from Stuttgart and the surrounding area, works by five to eight artists were exhibited decentrally in the city districts until 1992. The series also had the purpose of “introducing citizens to contemporary art outside the threshold of museums in a kind of basic work”. One year after the works had been set up, the city decided to purchase selected works. "It was very pleasing that there was hardly any damage."

From 1983 to 1990 around 70% of the works on display were acquired by the city. From 1991 onwards no more works were purchased due to “lack of budget”. Finally, the exhibition series was discontinued in 1993. Since then, the city has not committed itself to the targeted and regular promotion of sculptors.

Exhibition catalogs

A catalog was published for the annual exhibitions. The first catalog for 1982/83 was still called “Plastic in the open space”, all subsequent catalogs were called “Plastic in the open”. The first edition was published by Dieter Hannemann (1935–1983), the managing director of the Artists' Association of Baden-Württemberg. After Hannemann's death in 1983, the sculptor Reinhold Georg Müller took over the editing. In the eleventh and final catalog, Müller wrote:

"In my opinion, times when art and culture fall victim to limited financial possibilities can only become intolerant, barbaric and hostile."

Valve well

There are 16 cast iron fountains of a similar design in Stuttgart. The well is designed as a square column with ornamental reliefs, to which the faucet and the sink-like trough are attached.

In the list, the valve wells are marked in column 1 with bv.

Rössle Parade 2007

In 2007 Stuttgart was named "European Sports Capital 2007". On this occasion, a “Horse Parade” was organized based on the model of the animal parades that had taken place in many cities since 1998. The Rössle, a jumping horse, is the city's symbol and heraldic animal.

Many of the 255 centimeter high Rössle can still be found in the city today. In the list, they are marked in column 1 with p (like parade).

Inter Kultur Foto Art Stuttgart / Paris 2014

From October 10 to November 10, 2014, a German-French photo exhibition (“Photo Parcours”) took place in public space as part of the 15th French Weeks 2014. The exhibition Inter Kultur Foto Art Stuttgart / Paris showed selected works by two German and three French photo artists on large-format posters on PVC tarpaulin between Marienplatz and Erwin-Schoettle-Platz in the Stuttgart district of Heslach . The main concern of the organizers was "to bring photography into the everyday life of a city district and to allow it to meet a curious audience". The curator of the exhibition was Emmanuelle Halkin.

Participants and topics of the exhibition:

  • Germany
    • Nathalie Mohadjer: Two beers for Haiti
    • Pia Schweisser: Hüzün (Turkish: sadness)
  • France
    • Marie Hudelot: Héritage (legacy)
    • Emmanuel Lardinois: Vestiges industriels (Traces of Industry)
    • Hortense Soichet: Habiter une Zone Urbaine Sensible: portrait de la Goutte d'Or (Living in the social hotspot: Portrait of the Goutte d'Or district in Paris )

In the descriptions, important information is often missing, the existing photos are often only available in thumbnail size, there is often a direct link to the city map, no sorting by sculptor. The website is sometimes confusing because the description of the sculptures is pressed into a given scheme that is not intended for this purpose.
