The New York Jets are an American football team of the National Football League (NFL) and play in the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference (AFC). The jets are based in Florham Park , New Jersey . The home games are played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford . It is currently the only stadium in the league that is shared with another team, the New York Giants . From 1984 to 2010 the home games of the Jets were played in the Giants Stadium .
history
The team was founded in 1959 as Titans of New York , making it one of the founding members of the American Football League (AFL). The first home games were played in the Polo Grounds Stadium. As a result of a change of ownership in 1963, the team name was changed to New York Jets and the games were played at Shea Stadium . The first star of the Jets was quarterback Joe Namath , who was also the protagonist in the famous "Heidi Game" (32:43 against the Oakland Raiders ), in which NBC stopped broadcasting the game in 1968 at 32:29 and showed the children's film Heidi returns home so that TV audiences missed the Raiders' two last minute touchdowns. The jets involuntarily ensured that all football broadcasts have been broadcast in full since then. Namath led the Jets to their first and so far only Super Bowl title. After he “guaranteed” to the assembled press that the Jets would defeat the favored Baltimore Colts , they actually won Super Bowl III 16: 7. This is considered one of the greatest sensations in NFL history and Namath's "guarantee" as one of the most famous quotes.
When the NFL and AFL merged in 1970, the team became a member of the NFL. After Namath dismantled due to an injury, the Jets sank in mediocrity until the team built a strong defensive line in the 1980s . Linemen Mark Gastineau , Joe Klecko , Marty Lyons and Abdul Salaam achieved so many quarterback sacks that they were called the "New York Sack Exchange" based on the famous New York Stock Exchange . Nevertheless, it never managed to move into the Super Bowl. In the 1990s, the jets were plagued by many mistakes: Coach Rich Kotite was stuck with for a long time , although he only had four wins in two years, while other coaches like Pete Carroll (later winner of Super Bowl XLVIII ) never had a real one Got a chance and drafted with moderate success. This negative series of the Jets was crowned in the 1996 season; when the regular season ended with a record of one win and 15 losses. In the 2004 play-offs against the Pittsburgh Steelers , jet kicker Doug Brien missed two late field goal attempts, both of which would have decided the game in the Jets' favor. In the end you lost with 17:20. Under coach Rex Ryan , the Jets revived once again, fueled by a strong defense of cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie , linemen Muhammad Wilkerson and D'Brickashaw Ferguson , who took the offense to center Nick Mangold , running back LaDainian Tomlinson and quarterback Mark Sanchez relieved. Still, you didn't get into the Super Bowl, and the Jets haven't been in the play-offs since 2010.
Fan culture
The nickname for the Jets is Gang Green , an allusion to the green Jets jerseys and a play on the disease gangrene , which expresses the "danger of death" that the Jets pose to their opponents. The Jets' biggest rivals are the New England Patriots , especially since Patriots coach Bill Belichick left the Jets in 1999 and won six Super Bowl titles for the Patriots. To a lesser extent, there has been antipathy for the Miami Dolphins , especially since their quarterback Dan Marino pretended to spike the ball to stop the clock in 1994 shortly before the end , but then threw the decisive touchdown to Mark Ingram . Other rivalries exist with local rivals Buffalo Bills and New York Giants .
