Two US-Americans and two Nigerians each qualified for the final from Jamaica, Canada, Namibia and Great Britain.

Carl Lewis , the American Olympic champion in 1984 and 1988 , was not there. Because of a virus infection, Lewis only competed in the long jump at the US Olympic eliminations. The real favorite was Lewis' compatriot Leroy Burrell, who had topped the world rankings in 1990 and 1991. Other medal candidates were the Briton Linford Christie, Burrell's compatriot Dennis Mitchell and Frank Fredericks from Namibia.

Ben Johnson, the Canadian doping offender who had lost his Olympic victory in 1988 to Carl Lewis for proven doping, was back again. But he only made it to the semi-finals, in which he was eliminated as the last of his run.

The finale began with a false start caused by Burrell. The second attempt at take-off was canceled by Dennis Mitchell, who felt disturbed in his take-off preparations. The third time it worked. Burrell, probably unsettled by his false start, couldn't get into gear and had nothing to do with the outcome of the race. Christie, by far the oldest finalist at 32, won the race ahead of Frank Fredericks from Namibia and Dennis Mitchell. The Canadian Bruny Surin was fourth, Leroy Burrell fifth ahead of the Nigerian Olapade Adeniken. Jamaican Raymond Stewart crossed the finish line in seventh place, followed by second Nigerian Davidson Ezinwa.

Frank Fredericks won the first Olympic medal for Namibia.
