After Pessoa had submitted 4 fault points in the jump-off for the silver medal, Kappler had to give up after about half of the course, as his stallion Royal Kaliber had represented himself. Marco Kutscher missed the jump-off for the silver medal only with a time error of a few hundredths of a second.

The Irish Cian O'Connor was deprived of the gold medal because of doping, whereby Marco Kutscher moved up into the medal ranks. The retrospectively awarded medal was presented on October 21.

The German team was able to win the competition with the third rider.
The decision for second place was only made in the jump-off, which the USA won because of the better time.

But then " Goldfever ", the horse of the German rider Ludger Beerbaum , was noticed during the doping test. Even the international sports court CAS believed that Beerbaum had only used the proven substance betamethasone to treat skin irritation in horses. The FEI Judicial Committee also accepted that the substance was used for a medical indication and not to improve performance. Nevertheless, "Goldfever" "did indeed have a prohibited substance in its body and was to be disqualified according to the rules. Beerbaum waived an appeal.

The gold medal went to the US team. Sweden moved up to the silver rank. Germany's remaining three riders remained after all, still the bronze medal, as the actual match results (1st round five, 2.DL 8 points) now came to the vote.

After a protest by France, the German team was briefly stripped of the gold medal and a penalty of 14 points was awarded for exceeding the time limit, as the German final rider Bettina Hoy made a mistake at the beginning of the course. As a result, the team fell to fourth place in the overall standings. Hoy accidentally crossed the starting line during a short warm-up lap. The time measurement during Hoy's victory ride started incorrectly after crossing the start line a second time. As a rule, this should have happened after the first time it was exceeded.

Therefore, after Germany's own objection to this judgment, the gold medal was awarded again for reasons of sportiness. The jury should have indicated the beginning of the time measurement to the final German rider when she first crossed the start line. This would have given Hoy the chance to finish the short lap faster and could have stayed in the allowed time of 90 seconds.

After a renewed objection from the following nations France, Great Britain and the USA , the decision was referred to the International Court of Justice . The latter decided on August 21st that both medals should be revoked from Germany. The court justified the decision , which was heavily criticized from many sides, with the fact that the FEI arbitration tribunal, which awarded the German team and Bettina Hoy the medal again after the German objection, should not have overturned the decision of the ground jury of the world association because it was itself it was a factual decision.

On August 25, the World Equestrian Federation (FEI) submitted a petition to the IOC to award the gold medal twice, but not to officially evaluate the German medals. This pardon was rejected by the IOC on August 27th. The decision is then final.
