The planning region Nuremberg or planning region Nuremberg (7) called (also: Nuremberg region or Nuremberg conurbation ), is one of a total of 18 planning regions of the Free State of Bavaria . Together with Nuremberg (center of the region) and its independent neighboring cities of Fürth , Erlangen and Schwabach, it forms the Nuremberg agglomeration and the core of the Nuremberg metropolitan region . Until April 30, 2014 it was the planning region of the industrial region of Middle Franconia .

The Nuremberg planning region is located in the eastern part of the Central Franconia administrative region and forms an important part of the European metropolitan region of Nuremberg . The following bodies are united in the Regional Planning Association for the Nuremberg Region : the four independent cities of Erlangen , Fürth , Nuremberg and Schwabach and the four districts of Erlangen-Höchstadt , Fürth , Nürnberger Land and Roth as well as the associated district communities. In 2019 there were 1,353,032 inhabitants in the region, at 461 E / km² on an area of ​​2,934.67 km² in 86 municipalities. The four neighboring cities of Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach accounted for 800,376 inhabitants on 367.5 km² (corresponds to 2,178 U / km²), which together form one of the three metropolises in Bavaria as a multiple center.

The cities of Hersbruck , Herzogenaurach , Lauf ad Pegnitz and Roth are among the regional centers .

The cities of Altdorf b. Nuremberg , Hilpoltstein , Höchstadt ad Aisch are sub-centers that were classified as possible medium-sized centers. Further sub-centers in the planning region are Allersberg , Georgensgmünd , Greding , Langenzenn and Schnaittach .

The small centers in the Nuremberg region include Abenberg , Adelsdorf , Burgthann , Cadolzburg , Großhabersdorf , Heideck , Hemhofen , Mühlhausen , Neuhaus adP , Pommelsbrunn , Röttenbach , Roßtal , Schwanstetten , Spalt , Thalmässing , Velden , Weisendorf and Wilhermsdorf .

history

In 1972 the Free State of Bavaria was divided into 18 planning regions on the basis of the Bavarian State Planning Act of 1970. The Regional Planning Association was established in 1973. The current association chairman is Matthias Thürauf , Lord Mayor of Schwabach.

Education and Research

The Nuremberg region has the second largest collection of universities and colleges in Bavaria. The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität (FAU) with its locations in Nuremberg and Erlangen is the third largest Bavarian university. Furthermore, the TH Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm (THN) is the oldest polytechnic school in Bavaria in the region. In addition to the art schools Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and Nuremberg Academy of Music are also the Lutheran University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg (EVHN), the Fuerth Wilhelm Löhe University (WLH), the International Business School Nuremberg (IBS) and a branch of the College of Economics and Management ( FOM) resident.
