Schönfels is a village between the Saxon Vogtland and the Ore Mountains with around 1500 inhabitants. It belongs to the municipality of Lichtentanne in the district of Zwickau . The main attraction is Schönfels Castle , which was built in the second half of the 12th century . On January 1, 1996 Schönfels was incorporated into the community of Lichtentanne.

The cluster village is about 8 kilometers west of Zwickau. It is traversed by the Schönfelser Bach , which flows 2 km further into the Neumarker Bach . This in turn is a tributary of the Pleiße . Schönfels is located in the Vorerzgebirge , approx. 90 km south of Leipzig . The state border with Thuringia is in the Werzeit Forest to the west of the town .

Waters
There are numerous ponds in and around Schönfels:
- Burgteich (south of the village on the edge of the forest)
- Gondola pond (in the town center with a restaurant, playground, boat rental and a view of the castle, used as an ice rink in winter)
- Talmühlteich (at the end of the Grundstrasse in the direction of Gospersgrün)
- Zwirnteich (northeast of the castle near the Liebberg)
- Bassin (in the Schönfels Forest)
None of these ponds is currently designated as a bathing pond.
In earlier times there were a number of ponds on the courtyard meadow between Neu- and Altschönfels (scooping pond, fountain pond, alder pond, lower, middle and upper Neuschönfels pond), which were separated from each other by wide dams.
The Burgteichbach comes from the southeast of the Schönfelser Wald and flows through the Röhren- and Burgteich. In the gondola pond it meets the Schönfelser Bach, which comes from the southwest of Neuschönfels and the Schönfelser Wald. The Schönfelser Bach leaves the gondola pond through an overflow at the dam in a westerly direction and then leads to the Plexgrund, where it supplies the Talmühl pond with water. Further down the valley past the sports field it goes to the confluence with the Neumarker Bach on Gospersgrüner Flur. Shortly afterwards, in Steinpleis , the Pleiße is reached. This leads over the White Elster to the Saale and on over the Elbe to the North Sea .
The name Plexgrund , derived from Plexe or Pleiße , suggests that today's Schönfelser Bach used to be the origin of the Pleiße. A corresponding dispute was decided differently. On May 3, 1915, the Ministry of the Interior determined that the stream that rises in Eberbrunn should be called Pleiße.

Schönfels is dominated by the castle hill located in the middle of the village , which is 392 m above sea level. NN is high. To the west of it is the Neuschönfelser Schafberg (368 m above sea level) in the direction of Gospersgrün . Every year on April 30th, Walpurgis celebrations take place here. In the Schönfels forest south of the village, heights of up to 431 m above sea level are reached. NN reached. The 389 m high Liebberg can be found north of Schönfels in the direction of Thanhof .

Until the 19th century
Schönfels was first mentioned in a document in 1225 together with Neumark in Vogtland, 8 km away .
The oldest lords of Schönfels were the bailiffs von Weida and their younger line, the bailiffs von Plauen . The owners changed several times. In 1494 the castle and rule went to the Weißbach family . Wolf von Weißbach died in 1535. He left 4 sons and there was an inheritance dispute. Therefore, in 1548 the von Weißbach brothers shared the inheritance and jurisdiction in Alt- and Neuschönfels. Two manors were created . Most of the parish village of Schönfels, the parish village of Stenn (excluding six houses belonging to Ruppertsgrün ), part of the large parish village of Lichtentanne, part of the village of Gospersgrün and part of the parish village of Beiersdorf belonged to the manor Altschönfels . A smaller part of Schönfels, the entire parish village of Ebersbrunn , part of the village of Altrottmannsdorf and most of the village of Untereumark belonged to the Neuschönfels manor .
The municipal accounts for 1553 show expenses for the reed water. Schönfels was supplied with drinking water early on by a water pipe. The old wooden pipes from the Middle Ages were replaced by iron ones in 1891, the old water tanks gave way to new pressure stands. During the 30 Years War the place was devastated in 1618 and there were also many plague victims . The consecration of the church of St. Martin, which was built in difficult times, took place in 1628. In 1649, Job von Milkau sold Altschönfels to Georg Karl von Carlowitz . The Carlowitze ruled the peasants with a hard hand. When the plague raged in Zwickau in 1682, the Zwickau grain markets were held in Schönfels.
Privy councilor Gottfried Graf Bose took over the ownership of Neuschönfels in 1686. Georg Heinrich von Bärenstein acquired Schönfels Castle in 1725. In 1770 the castle and property of Altschönfels passed to the von Römer family until 1945 . In 1831 the ownership of Neuschönfels passed to the Hempel family. In 1899 the Uhlig family took over the ownership of Neuschönfels until 1945. Until 1856, Schönfels belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Zwickau in the Ore Mountains District . In 1856, in contrast to today's part of the municipality Altrottmannsdorf , Schönfels was not affiliated with the Reichenbach court office , but with the Zwickau court office and thus with the Zwickau administration in 1875 , while Altrottmannsdorf became part of the Plauen administration .
From the 20th century
In 1905 the school was rebuilt. The voluntary fire brigade was founded in 1925. The first bus line to Zwickau ran in 1928. In the same year, the waterworks and water pipes as well as the street lighting were built. Between 1932 and 1935, the bypass of what was then Reichsstraße 2 (today 
) was built to relieve the town center. The village pond was silted up in 1934 and again in 1986. In 1920 Schönfels and Altrottmannsdorf were assigned to the Werdau administration . As a result of the dissolution of the administrative district, both places came to the Zwickau district administration in 1933 , which from 1939 was called the Zwickau district.
In the course of the land reform in Germany in 1945, the two manors were dissolved. Housing for resettled families was created in the castle and the buildings of the manor. 22 new farmer positions were created.
On January 1, 1949, Altrottmannsdorf was incorporated into Schönfels. As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , the community of Schönfels became part of Zwickau-Land in the Chemnitz district (renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which was continued as the Saxon district of Zwickau from 1990 and in 1994 in the Zwickauer Land district rose. The LPG was founded in 1953. From 1960 Schönfels was a fully cooperative village. Then the merger of the LPG Schönfels and Altrottmannsdorf took place. By merging with cooperatives from other communities, a powerful agricultural cooperative for animal and plant production was created. The school gym was built in 1961. From 1970 the construction of the residential estates Burgstrasse and Siedlerstrasse took place. 1973 began the renovation of the castle, the expansion of the museum and the restaurant. Two years later, in 1975, the restored and modernized castle was opened.
In 1993 the development and development of the residential area Am Burgblick began . In 1995/1996 Schönfels was connected to the natural gas network. The nursing home was put into operation in 1996; it was later expanded to include assisted living. With the amalgamation of the communities of Lichtentanne, Schönfels and Stenn, Schönfels and Altrottmannsdorf became a district of the community of Lichtentanne on January 1, 1996. From 2000 to 2001 the connecting road S 282a - new forest road - was built. On April 1, 2008, Altrottmannsdorf was deleted as part of the municipality of Lichtentanne. Shortly thereafter, Schönfels came to the district of Zwickau with the municipality of Lichtentanne on August 1, 2008 as part of the Saxon district reform.

The district road K9351 leads to the neighboring town of Thanhof , and the K9304 comes from the neighboring town of Stenn and branches off in the district of Altrottmannsdorf to Gospersgrün .

Biking and hiking trails
Schönfels is on the route of the pilgrimage route No. 13 of the Way of St. James in Germany from Stettin to Hof (Saale) . In the village this leads from Lichtentanne on the Rußbuttensteig , briefly over the street Zum Liebberg and then on a farm road to the Zwirnteich . From there it goes through the gardens up to the castle and then over the Bräugasse down to the town center. The Plexgrund can be reached along Zwickauer Strasse and Grundstrasse . Here the path turns left before the Talmühlteich uphill to Gospersgrün .
Other hiking trails lead north through the Plexgrund to the Zwirnteich and Thanhof . In the south there are hiking trails from Altrottmannsdorf and Neuschönfels through the Schönfelser Wald to Ebersbrunn and Hauptmannsgrün .
Schönfels is on the route of the Berlin - Regensburg long-distance cycle route . The Werdau - Cheb section leads from the north on the streets Zum Liebberg and Zwickauer Straße to Ebersbrunner Straße . At the end of the village to the south, a separate cycle path is laid out parallel to the S 282a , which partly uses the old, dismantled forest road . This leads uphill to Ebersbrunn .
train
In three kilometers away, north-east, the station is light fir on the railway line Werdau-Dresden , of the line 5 S of the S-track means Germany is operated. S-Bahn trains run every hour to Leipzig - with connections to long-distance services in Werdau and Leipzig - and beyond to Leipzig / Halle Airport and in the opposite direction to Zwickau with connections to Chemnitz and Dresden.
To the east, also three kilometers away, is the Stenn stop on the Zwickau – Falkenstein railway line . This is served by the 'RB 1' line of the Vogtlandbahn and offers connections to the Vogtland to Schöneck and Klingenthal and beyond to Kraslice . In the opposite direction you get to Zwickau main station and the terminal in Zwickau city center.

The nearest airports with regular flight operations are Leipzig / Halle Airport 120 km north, Dresden Airport 130 km east and Erfurt-Weimar Airport 140 km west of Schönfels.

Altschönfels Castle
The medieval castle built on a mountain above the town is very well preserved. Schönfels Castle houses a museum and a restaurant. From the tower of the castle there is a very nice panoramic view of the adjacent areas.

Neuschönfels Castle
After the division of the land in 1548 by the Weißbach brothers, the Neuschönfels manor was created in 1550.
The entrance is reinforced by two low, simple round buildings with loopholes as a bridgehead. The southwest corner is adorned with a rich, only partially preserved round bay window with the decorative forms of the early Renaissance , which developed during the same time in Dresden under Duke George the Bearded at the Georgentor . Inside, sandstone, articulated door frames and wooden ceilings from the same period have been preserved.
The former mansion was used in the GDR as a kindergarten, municipal office, savings bank, library and post office. Currently vacant and changing hands several times, it is now increasingly falling into disrepair.

St. Martin Church
The church, consecrated in 1628, is located in the center of the village on the Kirchberg, which is opposite the Burgberg.
With the construction of Schönfels Castle in the 12th century, the town of Schönfels was probably created at the same time. It can be assumed that the construction of a small church began soon. This first church had become too small and so dilapidated that it could not be improved .
The Church of St. Martin was built in the years 1625–1628, in the middle of the Thirty Years' War , under the need of devaluation and all kinds of toil (only widows sat on the lords of Altschönfels and Neuschönfels). The church, built in a simple baroque style, was, like the previous one, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours . Since then, the church has been preserved to this day without major structural changes. The last renovation work took place in 1959/60 and 1992/93 (after sponge renovation of the roof structure). In 2013, the renovation of the church tower was carried out with subsidies.
The pulpit altar , donated by Margarete von Weißenbach in 1625, has a Tuscan column structure with cartilage ornamentation . The pulpit was not added until 1839. Originally there was a crucifix in the middle field with the adoring donor figures, which are now attached to the wall to the left and right of the altar. The other figures are:

- on the pulpit in the middle Jesus with the globe,

Below and above the pulpit are the 16 ancestral coats of arms of the Weißenbach family.
The St. Martin's altar on the right in the chancel is a late Gothic winged altar . On the inside of the wings: Anna selbdritt and Andreas and on the outside the apostles Peter and Paul. There is also a Madonna in a halo on the right wall. Both were taken from the previous church. There is a marble epitaph above the Martin's altar , dedicated by Georg Heinrich von Bärenstein (died 1734). On the walls of the chancel there are three grave monuments of the von Milkau family , Job von Milkau with his 2 sons, who all died in 1618 “of the red dysentery”.
The organ opposite the altar is a work of the Schmeißer company from Rochlitz, built in 1914. It has 19 sounding registers with 1107 pipes on two manuals and pedal . When the organ was overhauled in 1971, a Zimbelstern was also installed. The baptismal font came into the church in 1913. The original, certainly baroque , font has been lost. As with many other churches, the Schönfels bronze bell was lost except for one bell during the First World War . For this purpose, a cast steel bell from the Schilling company from Apolda was installed in 1921 . In 2007, after a complete renovation of the bell cage, a bronze bell could be put back into operation. Were donated this three bells in the art and bell foundry Lauchhammer were made by Fred Oettel (one in Florida living and now deceased Werdauer with ancestors in Schönfels).
The Schönfels church has had an electric bench heater since 1913, which is still functional today. In this way, the service can be held in the church even in the winter months .

At the corner of Neumarker Straße ( ) and Zwickauer Straße is the remainder of a Saxon full-mile column from 1731 from the Dresden- Hof postal route , which was originally halfway towards Altrottmannsdorf. It was found in the garden of Unterdörfel'schen Haus in 1939 and the community installed it first at the junction of Stenner Straße, then in the so-called triangle near the current position and replaced the missing upper part with a small cover. In 2017 the restoration, true to original addition and alignment of the column at the previous location took place.

Agriculture and forestry are of particular economic importance for the place; Gastronomy and tourism also play a role. WECK + POLLER Spedition GmbH and ERLOS GmbH (including recycling of lithium-ion batteries ) have settled on the site of the former LPG .

The origins of the Schönfelser sport go back to the 19th century. In 1880 the gymnastics club Concordia was founded. The club's location was the Schützenhaus Döhler in Neuschönfels. Around 40 years later, in 1920/21, a workers gymnastics club was founded. Your club house was initially the Gasthof zum Löwen in Altschönfels. In 1930, the club members laid out the sports field in the Plexgrund and built the gymnastics home . In 1933 the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association was banned. The Reich Labor Service took over the Turnerheim and Concordia the sports field.
On November 3, 1948, 38 men founded the Schönfels sports club . Football dominated, and gymnastics and table tennis were also practiced. On February 4, 1949, the community handed over the sports field and athletes' home to SG Schönfels. A certificate prepared for this is dated May 1st. Since then the SG 48 Schönfels (meanwhile BSG Traktor Schönfels ) has been a constant in football in the Zwickau district. In 1963 and 1966, the Schönfelser district champions were won, the district cup was won a total of 6 times.
Included, in addition to football and other sports are also this: table tennis , chess , cycling , women's gymnastics , gymnastics , wheel gymnastics , aerobics , bowling and volleyball .
In the 1970s and 1980s there was a friendship - combined with regular visits - between SG 48 Schönfels and TJ Sokol Pěnčín from what was then Czechoslovakia . After the end of the GDR, these visits on a family basis were continued until at least 2017.
Since 2017, the Valencia football camp for young players has been held annually in Plexgrund with coaches from Valencia CF from Spain.
