The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 21st time in 1995/96 as only the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 1995/96 season. Each team played four times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by Dunfermline Athletic , who thereby secured participation in the Premier Division season 1996/97 . Dundee United won as runner-up in the promotion relegation against Partick Thistle . Hamilton Academical and FC Dumbarton had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 21 goals was George O'Boyle of FC St. Johnstone from Northern Ireland .
