Vals [fals] is a municipality with 530 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Innsbruck-Land district in Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Innsbruck .
geography
location
Vals comprises the entire six kilometer long Valsertal , which joins the Schmirntal at St. Jodok and flows into the Wipptal at Stafflach . Padaun is also part of Vals .
The community area extends to the Tux main ridge at an altitude of over 3000 m. In the southeast, the municipality also forms the border to South Tyrol ( Italy ).
The valley westward from Valser Bach flows through the St. Jodok of the right to Schmirnbach receives and Stafflach from the right in the north of the Inn inflowing Sill flows.
The main town is St. Jodok, the northern half of which, however, belongs to the community of Schmirn . At St. Jodok, the Brennerbahn gains altitude with a loop.

Three of the five neighboring communities are in the Innsbruck-Land district, one each in the Schwaz district and one in South Tyrol.

history
The first documentary mention is in 1313 as "Valles". The name is derived from vallis ( Latin for valley ), as the area was once used by the Romansh-speaking farmers of the Wipptal as an alpine pasture area.
In the Middle Ages marble was quarried in the Valser Valley, among other things the floors of the Hofburg in Innsbruck and the Innsbruck Cathedral come from here.
In 1809, Vals was the battle area during the Battle of Bergisel .
In 1942 the entire valley was placed under nature protection, and in 2001 a new ordinance of 35.19 km² of the rear Valsertal was made as a Natura 2000 area.
In the time of National Socialism, prisoners of war and forced laborers were used in Vals for the planned mining of molybdenum up to 2950 m above sea level near the Alpeiner Scharte and many died in the process. For this purpose, forced labor camps were set up there. The breakdown of molybdenum did not succeed.
Rockslide
On December 24, 2017, from 6:17 p.m. CET, a rock fall of several 10,000 tonnes of rock occurred , which broke off from the northern slope of the valley and, together with the earth masses and tree trunks carried along, the Valser Landesstraße (L 230) in the Wiesle area over a length of 150 meters spilled. The section in question ( ) begins a few meters west of the Jörglerhof and runs out of the valley. Residential buildings were not touched, but were affected by blown dust. The foothills of the falling masses reached the bed of the Valserbach, and the precipitation of dust turned the snow surface gray up to 150 m. As a result of the further risk situation, which was initially unclear, 12 buildings with 36 residents in the Tummelers Sand area were provisionally evacuated, but with the exception of three buildings could be released the following day. Since a gap in the demolition zone widened in the course of December 25, further landslides are to be expected. From the Jörglerhof to the head of the valley, around 70 people were cut off according to the state road, but could be reached via a farm road. A bypass of the blocked road section of the L 230 was set up on December 26th, but may be affected by the danger of avalanches if snow conditions allow.
After the armed forces had put up 160 armored hedgehogs as rockfall protection for two houses in the Unterwiese district and for the section of the state road there, the assistance operation could be ended on January 18th. All residents were able to return to their homes and the previously closed section of the state road to the Padaun junction could be released. It is planned to erect the part of the building in 2020/21. The priority is that the road is relocated and protective dams are built; this should provide more protection against avalanches and falling rocks.

The last mayoral elections took place at the same time as the municipal council elections on February 28, 2016.
Klaus Ungerank (Alternative Vals-St. Jodok) was elected Mayor and Josef Mair (Farmers - General List) was elected Vice Mayor.

The coat of arms consists of a stylized V, which symbolizes the structure of the valley, as well as the crown of St. Jodok.
tourism
The Valsertal with St. Jodok belongs to the association area of the Wipptal tourism association. With the Natura 2000 nature reserve at the end of the valley, the Valsertal remained one of the most untouched side valleys of the Wipptal. Since 2012, Vals and St. Jodok have been part of the Austrian Mountaineering Villages , an initiative of the Austrian Alpine Association to promote sustainable tourism. Vals is also easily accessible by public transport through the train station in St. Jodok.
In addition, together with Schmirn, Vals is part of the “North Tyrolean Grauvieh Almochs” culinary region with high-quality beef that is offered in some inns.
In Vals there is only one small mountaineering hotel in St. Jodok, the Gasthof Steckholzer and a few private landlords as accommodation options.
summer
There are numerous hiking opportunities in summer. The tourist rest stop at the end of the Valsertal is the starting point of the "Peter Habeler Runde", a moderately difficult hut tour with 6 stages around the Olperer (3,476 m). On the initiative of some mountain farmers, the Alm school was founded in the Valsertal, where those interested can learn about the activities on an alpine pasture and in the mountain mowing.
In St. Jodok there is the Peter Kofler via ferrata (difficulty C - medium) in the Stafflacher Wand and in the rear Valsertal there are opportunities for bouldering, sport climbing ( Fußstein ) and ice climbing.
winter
There is a small practice lift operated by the community and two natural toboggan runs (Schwarzer Brunnen, Padaun) and a cross-country ski run in the rear valley basin. The area around the Vennspitze with the Silleskogel is a popular ski touring area and the Padauner Kogel is a worthwhile destination with snowshoes. In St. Jodok there is an ice rink suitable for competitions, which is illuminated in the evenings during the holidays.
