Wangenbourg-Engenthal (German Wangenburg ) is a French commune and a tourist resort with 1,354 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ).

geography

Wangenbourg-Engenthal is located in the Middle Vosges on the upper reaches of the Mossig and borders the Moselle department . The highest point is the 961 meter high Schneeberg . The street village is connected to the traffic network by the department road D 218. The Route de Bois also runs there . In the southwest is the Forêt Domaniale d'Engenthal , in the east the Forêt Domaniale de la Mossig .

The districts of Engenthal-le-Bas, Engenthal-le-Haut, Freudeneck, les Huttes, Oberstieg , Schneethal, Windsbourg and Wolfsthal belong to Wangenbourg-Engenthal .

history

In the 12th century donated Counts of Dabo the monastery Obersteigen with a hospice for pilgrims on their way over the Saverne supply. It flourished in the 13th century, but was moved to Zabern in 1303 .

On November 1, 1974, the municipalities of Wangenbourg and Engenthal merged into one municipality. It belonged to the Communauté de communes des Coteaux de la Mossig , founded in 1992 , which was merged into the Communauté de communes de la Mossig et du Vignoble in 2017 .
