The ice hockey competitions of the VII Winter Asian Games took place from January 28 - two days before the actual opening ceremony - to February 6, 2011 in the Kazakh cities of Astana and Almaty . In addition to the host nation Kazakhstan, eleven other countries took part in the competition. As a result, a new record number of participants was achieved for the second time in a row.

In order to compensate for the great discrepancy in performance between the top nations from Kazakhstan and Japan and the young ice hockey nations from Bahrain and Kyrgyzstan , the men played in a new mode. Both the five best and the remaining seven nations played the medal winners in two independent divisions . The gold medal of the top division was secured for the third time by Kazakhstan, which did not lose a tournament. Behind them Japan and South Korea won the other medals. In the Premier Division , Kyrgyzstan achieved first place in its first international appearance. Behind them, Thailand secured second place and the United Arab Emirates third.

Five teams again took part in the women's ice hockey tournament. The participants were the host nation, Japan, South Korea, North Korea and the People's Republic of China. The title was secured for the third time by Kazakhstan, which remained undefeated in all games. Japan won silver, China took bronze.
