The radical 2 with the meanings of "vertical bar" and " floor " is one of the six written with a single stroke radicals of 214 traditional radicals of Chinese writing .

The sign is similar to the Hangul sign ㅣ "i".

The radical floor takes only in the traditional characters - list of traditional radicals consisting of 214 radicals that second position. It can be found in a completely different place in modern abbreviation dictionaries. In the new Chinese-German dictionary from the People's Republic of China with ( 227 radicals ), for example, it is in 3rd position.

With 9 character combinations in Mathews' Chinese-English Dictionary , there are very few characters found under this radical in the dictionary. In the New German-Chinese Dictionary , too, there are only six characters. In the Kangxi dictionary , too, there were only 21 characters that could be found under this radical.

The vertical stroke (豎 shù) belongs to the eight principles of the character 永 (永字八法 Yǒngzì Bāfǎ), that is to say to the eight or five strokes that are the basis of Chinese calligraphy and from which all characters are composed.

meaning

The character probably developed from the pictorial representation of a stick that was used as a support or a weapon. In this basic meaning the radical practically no longer occurs, but in different characters with different meanings:

• In the character 中 (zhong = middle), for example, the vertical line stands for an arrow that goes through a target.
• In the character 木 (mu = tree, wood; radical 75 ) the vertical line stands for the tree trunk.
• In the character 申 (shen = to explain) the vertical line stands for a man who has his arms on the sides of his hips.
• In the character 串 (chuan = to line up) the vertical line stands for a spindle that goes through two objects.
• In the character 引 (yin = middle; radical 57 ) the vertical line stands for the tendon of a taut bow.
