The bronze lettering symbol represents the image of a ship, but this can no longer be recognized in the following seal lettering form. As a bearer of meaning in the compound symbol, 舟 (zhou) puts this in the meaning field "water transport" such as 舢 (in: 舢板 = sampan ), 航 (= boat), 舫 (= boat), 舱 (= cabin), 舰 ( = Warship), 艇 (ting = light boat). In all of these signs 舟 functions as a carrier of meaning, the other component as a sound carrier. As a sound carrier, 舟 only appears in some characters that are very unusual today. 盘 (= plate) is a shortened character that actually contains 般 as a sound carrier. In the shortened version, 舟 is only the remainder of the former carrier.
