Altenthann is a municipality in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg in the Falkensteiner Vorwald and a member of the Donaustauf administrative community .

Altenthann is located in the Regensburg region , about 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Wörth on the Danube .

With its humid climate, Altenthann is located in the cool, temperate climate zone . The community is located in the transition area between the humid Atlantic and dry continental climates . According to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification, Franconia, including Altenthann, belongs to the warm temperate rainy climate (Cfb climate). The mean air temperature of the warmest month remains below 22 ° C and that of the coldest month above -3 ° C.

Until the church is planted
Altenthann belonged to the Straubing Rent Office and the Stadtamhof District Court of the Electorate of Bavaria. The Frauenzell monastery owned an open court here from 1664 until secularization . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
Incorporations
In 1945/46, the previously independent municipality of Pfaffenfang ( Roding district ) and parts of the Göppenbach municipality were incorporated. Lichtenwald was added on January 1, 1978 .

Between 1988 and 2018, the community grew from 1,337 to 1,480 by 143 inhabitants or 10.7%.

20th and 21st centuries
In the past few decades, Altenthann has developed from an agricultural area to a residential community by designating building land and investing in infrastructure. Important goals of the community are currently investments in renewable, environmentally friendly energy, energy-saving technology, the further development of the infrastructure and broadband supply.

Princely Thiergarten of Thurn and Taxis
About three kilometers south of the village of Thiergarten is the completely fenced-in 2800 hectare Princely Thiergarten , a local recreation area with deer, deer, wild boar, lynx, beavers, otters, black storks and other animals. It was laid out in 1813 as a hunting forest for the Princes of Thurn and Taxis.
There, on October 1, 1988, at the Aschenbrennermarter hunting lodge , the Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss collapsed and died a few days later, on October 3, 1988, in the Regensburg hospital of the Barmherzigen Brüder .

- Parish Church of St. Nikolaus: The church of St. Nikolaus, built in 1712, burned down almost completely in 1832 and was largely demolished in 1904 and replaced by a new building by Heinrich Hauberrisser . Only the side altars and the pulpit are from 1830. The high altar by Josef Wittmann is from 1910.

There are numerous cycling and hiking trails around the village that lead through the vast forests. The outdoor pool in Falkenstein, about 14 km away, invites you to relax in summer. The next indoor swimming pool is in the city of Wörth an der Donau. In winter there are offers for skiers, tobogganists and curlingers.
Sports and clubs
There are over 20 clubs in the community, including a sports club. Altenthann has several sports facilities, including a tennis court and a multi-purpose hall.
