The place Barbastro is the capital of the Comarca Somontano de Barbastro in the Spanish province of Huesca and has 16,979 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is the center of the outstanding Somontano wine-growing region , in which world-famous wines have been made for centuries.
Barbastro is the western entrance gate to the Sierra de Guara mountain range .
history
The city was called Barbatius at the time of the Roman Empire . It was conquered by the Umayyads in 717 and was named Madyar. Until 882 it was the capital of the Emirate of Brabstra. During the Christian conquest it was subordinate to the Emir of Saragossa .
The fortified city was the target of a multinational Christian campaign against the Moors in 1064 .
The Diocese of Barbastro was founded in the 12th century and was renamed the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón in 1995 . The episcopal church is the Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción, built in the 16th century .
Shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish civil war , on July 20, 1936, all members of the local Claretian seminary were arrested. Most of them were shot in the days of August 1936.

- Raimund von Roda (born 1067 - June 21, 1126), bishop and saint
- Teresa Jornet y Ibars , born in Aytona ( Catalonia ) in 1843 , founder of the Congregation of the Hermanas de los Ancianos Desamparados (Sisters of the Elderly in Need), died in Barbastro on August 26, 1897 and was supported by Pope Paul VI on January 27, 1974 . canonized.
- Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer y Albás (1902–1975), born in Barbastro, founder of Opus Dei , beatified by John Paul II on May 17, 1992 and canonized on October 6, 2002.
Executed during the Spanish Civil War :
- Felipe de Jesus Munarriz (1875–1936), head of the Claretian seminary, together with 42 seminarians and eight consecrated priests, shot dead from August 2 to 18, 1936, all 51 people on October 25, 1992 by Pope John Paul II beatified.
- Ceferino Giménez Malla (1861–1936, called "El Pelé") from Fraga in the province of Huesca , who was arrested for standing up for a Catholic priest and executed on August 9, 1936 in Barbastro. He was beatified by John Paul II on May 4, 1997, making him the first Kalo and Roma member to be beatified .
- Florentino Asensio Baroso , born in Villasexmir in the province of Valladolid in 1877 , consecrated Bishop of Barbastro on January 26, 1936, was placed under house arrest during the civil war, tortured and shot on August 9, 1936, by John Paul II on May 4 Beatified in 1997.
