The county is located in south central Arkansas and has an area of 1731 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

It was named after George M. Dallas (1792–1864), who served from 1845 to 1849 as the eleventh Vice President of the USA.
In 1846 the first county courthouse was built. The previous county affairs were conducted in a private house. In 1850 the county had 256 slave owners and 2,542 slaves.
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Dallas County had 8,116 people in 3,297 households. The population density was 4.7 people per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 55.2 percent white, 41.9 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.3 percent of the population.
Statistically, 2.34 people lived in the 3,297 households.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.1 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.3 percent were 65 years or older. 51.4 percent of the population was female.
