history

middle Ages

The name of the community was first mentioned in a document around 1090 when Count Werner von Grüningen donated it to Hirsau Monastery . The current district of Lauterburg was first mentioned in 1128. In 1215 Essingen fell to the Hohenstaufen family . Lauterburg came to the Counts of Oettingen in 1276 and Essingen in 1345 at the latest . Already in 1358 the area came to the Württemberger , but in 1410 they pledged it to the barons of Woellwarth and left it as a fief in 1479.

Modern times

In the 16th century, the Barons von Woellwarth , who were enrolled in the knightly canton of Kocher , gradually acquired the goods of other landlords in the area and gained high jurisdiction in 1542 and customs sovereignty in 1548. In 1697 the Counts of Degenfeld bought part of Essingen from the Barons von Woellwarth.

As part of the Rhine Confederation Act , the area then went to the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1806 and was assigned to the Oberamt Aalen . After Lauterburg initially belonged to the municipality of Essingen, it formed an independent municipality since 1820.

During the district reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era , Essingen came to the Aalen district in 1938 . In 1945 the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. In the course of the district reform in Baden-Württemberg , the municipality came to the new Ostalbkreis in 1973 .

On December 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Lauterburg was incorporated.

Religions

The barons of Woellwarth introduced the Reformation after 1555 . Since then Essingen has been predominantly evangelical . Today, however, there is also a Roman Catholic Church and a New Apostolic congregation.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the municipality of Essingen (Württemberg)
Blazon : "In gold, the round black frame above a forge, on the grate of which a red flame blazes."

The municipality flag is red and yellow.

Justification of the coat of arms: The coat of arms , speaking in the sense of folk etymology, shows a forge as a name reference to the community. The Esse is first depicted in 1646 on a seal from the Essingen market. In 1930, the municipality included a naturalistic representation of the forge from this historical seal image in its official stamp, while the Stuttgart archive department suggested the Württemberg colors black and gold as the municipality's coat of arms colors. In 1948 the representation was adjusted. On March 12, 1979, the municipality was given the coat of arms and flag that is valid today from the Ostalbkreis district office.

Remstal Garden Show 2019

“Striking stairs” in the old quarry at the Rems origin

From May 10 to October 20, 2019, a green project of the state of Baden-Württemberg took place in Remstal , in which Essingen is also participating. This Remstal garden show 2019 is one of the "small" garden shows that alternate annually with the state garden shows.

In this context, the palace park was upgraded with a new palace pond and the "Remsterassen" were created to the west of the park. The area around the Rems origin has been redesigned. Essingen took part in the “16 stations”, the architecture project of the garden show, with the “distinctive staircase” in the old quarry opposite the Rems spring, which leads to a hiking trail.
