- Naypyidaw / Myanmar : The army is staging a coup due to persistent allegations that the parliamentary elections in November 2020 were cheated ; State Councilor (de facto head of government) Aung San Suu Kyi , President Win Myint and other high-ranking members of the ruling NLD party are arrested, and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces Min Aung Hlaing takes power and declares a state of emergency.

- New York City / United States : China blocks condemnation of the military coup in Myanmar in the United Nations Security Council . China fears that the situation in Myanmar will deteriorate in the event of sanctions or international pressure being exerted on those in power there.

- Rome / Italy : The Italian President Sergio Mattarella instructs Mario Draghi , the former President of the European Central Bank , to form a government.

- Doha / Qatar : Start of the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup
- London / Great Britain : The Office of Communications (OFCOM) has revoked the broadcasting license from the Chinese broadcaster CGTN .
- Washington, DC / United States : According to a statement from National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan , the United States is ceasing to support a Saudi Arabia- led military alliance in the civil war in Yemen . The United States is seeking a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
- Wellington , New Zealand : Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces the introduction of a new public holiday to be celebrated on Mondays or Fridays around the Maori New Year. The Maori New Year begins with the rise of Matariki , the star cluster of the Pleiades .

- Geneva / Switzerland : Libya receives a new interim government to help end the civil war in the North African state . A UN-nominated dialogue forum in Geneva elects the diplomat Mohammed Minfi as chairman of the presidential council and the businessman Abdul Hamid Dbeibah as head of government.
- Washington, DC / United States , Moscow / Russia : The New START disarmament agreement is expiring . An extension is planned.

- Naypyidaw / Myanmar : Following mass protests by the civilian population against the takeover of power by the military, the latter is shutting down the Internet across the country.

- Butembo / Democratic Republic of the Congo : Health Minister Etemi Longondo confirms the resurgence of the Ebola epidemic in the province of North Kivu , after another death caused by Ebola occurred in the Butembo region, the epicenter of the Ebola epidemic.
- Dehradun / India : A glacier run near Jyotirmath in Uttarakhand leads to flooding on the Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers . At least 18 people are killed and 200 are missing.
- Khartoum / Sudan : The former Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has arrived in the Sudanese capital as a mediator for the European Union to reduce tensions between Sudan and Ethiopia .

- Tampa / United States : Super Bowl LV between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Bucceneers

- Cortina d'Ampezzo / Italy : Start of the Alpine World Ski Championships (until February 21)
- Mogadishu / Somalia : After the term of office of the incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed expired , several opposition groups refused to recognize him as the incumbent head of state. Instead, a national council consisting of members of the executive, opposition parties and civil society is recognized. From this, a new head of state is to be determined temporarily.
- Tangier / Morocco : The flooding of an illegally operated textile factory in a private house as a result of intense rainfall in the region results in 24 workers killed and 10 injured.

- Kabul / Afghanistan : Government employees and the Minister for Economic Development of Rural Areas are killed in two bomb attacks in the Afghan capital. While Western media in particular see the Taliban as responsible for these attacks, their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejects them with the statement that the Taliban had nothing to do with them.
- Suva / Fiji : Due to differences of opinion about the person of the new Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum , the five member countries Palau , Micronesia , Marshall Islands , Nauru and Kiribati are withdrawing from the same. The five nations from Greater Micronesia feel underrepresented in this forum in the face of the larger nations from Melanesia and Polynesia .
- Space: The space probe al-Amal of the United Arab Emirates reached as planned orbit around the Mars .

- Berlin / Germany : At a Prime Minister's Conference, the Prime Ministers of the federal states agreed with Chancellor Angela Merkel to extend the current provisions to combat the coronavirus pandemic until March 7th, apart from a few easing. The federal states decide on the procedure for schools and daycare centers.
- Jakarta / Indonesia : At a press conference, the Indonesian Transport Safety Authority publishes an interim report on the crash of a Boeing 737-500 on Sriwijaya Air flight 182 on January 9, 2021. The report shows that the machine is known to be due to blocked thrust levers had crashed.
- Kabul / Afghanistan : A district chief of the police is killed in four bomb attacks in the Afghan capital.
- Pokljuka / Slovenia : Start of the biathlon world championship (until February 21)
- Space : The Chinese Tianwen-1 space probe reaches orbit around Mars on schedule .

- New Delhi / India : After the conclusion of an agreement on the mutually coordinated withdrawal of troops in the border conflict over the Pangong Tso salt lake in the Ladakh region , China and India are starting to withdraw soldiers from the region.
- Beijing / China : The Chinese media regulator has revoked the broadcasting license from the British broadcaster BBC World News .
- Toulon / France : Sister André Randon is the oldest religious sister in the world and at the same time the oldest European . She was born on February 11, 1904 in Alès in the south of France .
- Washington DC / United States : The US Treasury Department imposes sanctions on those involved in the military coup in Myanmar .
- Windhoek / Namibia : According to a press release from Finance Minister Iipumbu Shiimi , Air Namibia will be liquidated after flight operations have ceased . In view of other issues such as economic growth and social benefits, the Namibian government is no longer in a position to further subsidize the state airline. However, the government will pay an annual salary for every 600 employees.

- Berlin / Germany : 1000th session of the Federal Council . For the second time in history, the incumbent Federal President speaks to Frank-Walter Steinmeier in front of the regional chamber.
- London / Great Britain : The Supreme Court of Great Britain grants residents of the Niger Delta in Nigeria the right to sue the Dutch-British oil company Royal Dutch Shell in British courts for environmental pollution. The background to this is the longstanding legal dispute between two Nigerian municipalities and the group over environmental damage caused by spilled oil. The group takes the view that it is not liable for its Nigerian subsidiaries in Europe, and that saboteurs are responsible for the pollution caused by large-scale oil leaks.
- Minsk / Belarus : President Aljaksandr Lukashenka announces a constitutional referendum, which is to be held at the same time as local elections no later than January 18, 2022.
- New York City / United States : After a lengthy decision-making process, representatives from 123 contracting states elect Karim Khan from Britain as the new chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court . Khan succeeds Fatou Bensouda from Gambia , whose term of office ends after nine years.

- Rome / Italy : The former head of the European Central Bank ( ECB ), Mario Draghi , is sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Italy in the Quirinal Palace.
- Sohag / Egypt : During excavations in the Abydos burial site near Sohag, archaeologists discover a beer brewery that is over 5,000 years old, which was probably built at the time of Pharaoh Narmer towards the end of the 0th Dynasty and allowed the simultaneous production of 22,400 liters of beer.
- Tokyo / Japan : According to initial media reports, at least 120 people are injured in the Japanese prefectures of Fukushima and Miyagi and in the Kanto area in a severe earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 (11:08 p.m. local time) . 100,000 households are without electricity and water. There was no danger of a tsunami.
- Washington, DC / USA : Former US President Donald Trump is after five days of negotiations in his second impeachment proceedings ( impeachment acquitted by the Senate). 57 to 43 of the MPs consider Trump guilty of calling for a storm on the Capitol in Washington DC on January 6, 2021. A two-thirds majority would have been necessary for a conviction.

- Erbil / Iraq : A civilian worker is killed and several people are wounded in a rocket attack on a US-led military base at Erbil International Airport in the capital of the autonomous region of Kurdistan .
- Geneva / Switzerland : Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is elected as the new General Director of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
