  • Bogotá / Colombia : After ongoing protests against the government, which have already resulted in 26 deaths, Foreign Minister Claudia Blum submits her resignation.
  • Malé / Maldives : To the west of the Maldives, the remains of a Chinese Long Marsch-5B ( CZ-5B ) rocket fell into the Indian Ocean . At the end of April 2021, the rocket had transported the first module to a planned Chinese space station and has since lost altitude in an uncontrolled manner.
  • Qalāt-i Ghildschī / Afghanistan : A bus is hit in the explosion of a bomb dumped on the roadside in the province of Zabul . Eleven people are killed.

  • Bern / Switzerland : Switzerland Overshoot Day 2021
  • Boa Vista / Brazil : An indigenous man is wounded in an armed attack by illegal gold prospectors on members of the indigenous Yanomami ethnic group in their protected area in the state of Roraima . The indigenous people return fire and kill three of the illegal prospectors.
  • Kazan / Russia : At least eight people are killed and 20 injured, six of them life-threatening, in an attack on a school in Kazan. The 19-year-old shooter is arrested. Rumors about another perpetrator turn out to be false.

  • Berlin / Germany : The Federal Cabinet passes the first law amending the Federal Climate Protection Act . It is intended to implement the requirements of the Federal Constitutional Court , which at the end of April declared parts of the original law unconstitutional because it did not contain any reduction targets for the period from 2030 onwards. The amendment also tightens the existing goals for the period up to 2030, especially for the industrial and energy sectors. The governing coalition has not yet agreed on concrete measures for how the goals should be achieved.
  • Freetown / Sierra Leone : According to statements by Justice Minister Umaru Napoleon Koroma, the government of Sierra Leone plans to abolish the death penalty . The last execution took place in 1998.
  • Kabul / Afghanistan : Afghan authorities confirm that the Taliban have taken control of the strategically important Nirkh district in Wardak province west of Kabul.
  • Stuttgart / Germany : Baden-Württemberg's Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann is re-elected in the state parliament , exactly ten years after his first election as Prime Minister. The Kretschmann III cabinet is then sworn in.
  • Taipei / Taiwan : Taiwan increases the corona warning level to "two" (out of a maximum of four) because the origin of some new infections could not be traced. On May 12, Taiwan had 0.43 new corona infections per 1 million population (for comparison: Germany had 135.96 new corona infections per 1 million population on May 12). People in Taiwan are now required to wear masks everywhere outdoors; A maximum of five people may meet indoors and a maximum of ten people outdoors.

  • Kabul / Afghanistan : An attack on a mosque during Friday prayers in a suburb of Kabul kills 12 believers, including the Imam, and injures 15 others. The Taliban condemn the attack, which no one acknowledges.
  • Mumbai / India : Cyclone Tauktae hits land in the state of Gujarat . It leads to severe flooding in western India. More than 200,000 people were evacuated beforehand. Several ships off Mumbai are in distress in heavy seas, 77 seamen are missing. Tauktae is the strongest cyclone in this region since 1998.

  • Santiago de Chile / Chile : In the elections of the 155 members of the Chilean Constitutional Convention, the majority of those elected are center-left, with independent candidates playing an important role.
  • Vatican City : Pope Francis condemns the violence and repression in Myanmar as well as the military coup that led to the disempowerment of Aung San Suu Kyi in early February.

Genocide Memorial in Windhoek
  • Windhoek / Namibia ; Berlin / Germany : Germany and Namibia sign a provisional document classifying the injustice committed by troops of the German Reich against the Herero and Nama in the years 1904 to 1908 as genocide . In the document, Germany promises to make payments of 1.1 billion euros in development aid to Namibia - spread over the next 30 years. Negotiations on this document lasted more than six years. The parliaments of the two countries should also agree.
