  • Arouca / Portugal : Opening of the pedestrian suspension bridge 516 Arouca , which leads at a height of 175 m over the gorge of the Paiva river and with a length of 516 m is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world.
  • Pyongyang / North Korea : After US President Joe Biden warned the North Korean government about its use of nuclear weapons, the North Korean State Department threatened with consequences.

  • Laschkar Gah / Afghanistan : Afghan troops put down a military offensive by the Taliban , which is trying to bring the region under their control in the southern Afghan province of Helmand in the course of the withdrawal of international troops.

  • Datu Paglas / Philippines : At least 80 to 100 rebels from the Islamist militant faction of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters storm the market square of Datu Paglas, a city in Mindanao , and force the evacuation of many residents. In the course of the day the army manages to take control of the market.
  • Kabul / Afghanistan : At least 58 people, including many schoolgirls, are killed and 150 others injured in a bomb attack in front of a school in a residential area inhabited by the Hazara minority in the west of the Afghan capital. While the Afghan government blames the Taliban for the terrorist attack, they distance themselves from it and condemn the act.
  • Turin / Italy : 104th Giro d'Italia (until May 30, 2021)

  • Malé / Maldives : To the west of the Maldives, the remains of a Chinese Long March-5B ( CZ-5B ) rocket fell into the Indian Ocean . At the end of April 2021, the rocket had transported the first module to a planned Chinese space station and has since lost altitude in an uncontrolled manner.

  • Jerusalem / Israel : More than 100 rockets are fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip , dozens of which are intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system . There are impacts in Jerusalem; Air alarm is triggered in Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh , Ashkelon and Sderot . The Israeli army is carrying out counter attacks. The parliament in Jerusalem is evacuated in order to bring the MPs to shelters. One of the attacks occurred shortly after a by Hamas posed ultimatum had expired, Hamas had demanded that Israel all the police officers and settlers from the Temple Mount and from the neighborhood Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem withdraws and all detained in the context of recent confrontations Palestinians dismiss.

  • Bern / Switzerland : Switzerland Overshoot Day 2021
  • Kazan / Russia : At least eight people are killed and 20 injured, six of them life-threatening, in an attack on a school in Kazan. The 19-year-old shooter is arrested. Rumors about another perpetrator turn out to be false.

  • Berlin / Germany : The Federal Cabinet passes the first law amending the Federal Climate Protection Act . It is intended to implement the requirements of the Federal Constitutional Court , which at the end of April declared parts of the original law unconstitutional because it did not contain any reduction targets for the period from 2030 onwards. The amendment also tightens the existing targets for the period up to 2030, especially for the industrial and energy sectors. The governing coalition has not yet agreed on concrete measures for how the goals are to be achieved.
