The Flaaken nature reserve is located in the municipality of Lienen in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The area, which consists of two parts, extends southwest of the core town of Lienen. The state road L 834 runs directly on the northern edge of the area, and the B 475 runs south . The state border with Lower Saxony runs north, east and south .

Since 1988, a 132.5 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Lienen under the identification number ST-004. The area was placed under protection for the preservation and promotion of communities and biotopes , in particular of rare, partly endangered waders and meadow birds and partly endangered animal species and plant communities of the open water and the moist grassland .
