The Gerlings Sande nature reserve is located in the municipality of Saerbeck in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The area extends north of the core town of Saerbeck. The B 219 runs to the east and the Dortmund-Ems Canal flows , while the B 475 runs to the south . The Saerbeck wetland nature reserve extends to the south-east, covering 243.13 hectares .

A 11.49 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Saerbeck since 1993 under the identification number ST-055. The area was placed under protection

  • for the preservation, promotion and development of communities or habitats of partially endangered, wild plant and animal species, in particular for the protection and maintenance of a nutrient-poor standing water with the adapted, protected animal and plant species occurring here and
  • to maintain a dune landscape with its typical morphology that was created after the Ice Age .
