Setup date 1990

The Zachhorn nature reserve is located in the area of the city of Rheine in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Location and origin

The area is located east of the core city of Rheine. The state road L 501 runs to the north and the L 591 to the northeast . The Ems flows to the west and the Dortmund-Ems Canal to the northeast . The Rheine-Eschendorf airfield is not far to the northwest. The 8.15 hectare nature reserve Saltenwiese-Fernrodde extends further east . In the center of the protection area are two heather ponds , separated by a path , which are known as the large and small Zachhorn. These were probably created from an old loop of the river in the meandering area of the Ems and Hemmelter Bach. The original depth was lost due to the movement of drifting sand and slipping riverbanks, and today's ponds were created.

Flora and fauna

At the beginning of the 1980s, the smaller pond in the southwest was completely eutrophic . A reed pond stretched out on its banks. a. composed of broad-leaved cattail , common loosestrife, mud horsetail and flood plumes . Willow buckthorn bushes stretched out on the bank. The water surface was covered by stocks of the yellow pond rose , the water knotweed and the swimming pondweed . The great Zachhorn, on the other hand, was still characterized by vegetation in 1982 that is typical for nutrient-poor heather ponds. Here grew u. a .:

The ponds are the habitat of numerous amphibians. Moor frogs , crested newts , pond newts and common frogs were found .
