The Bockholter Berge nature reserve is a 61 hectare nature reserve in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia.

location

The nature reserve (identifier ST-032) is located east of the Greven district of Gimbte , between the Ems and the Schiffahrter Damm. Adjacent to the north and west is the Emsaue nature reserve (identifier ST-102), with which it forms a part of the FFH area Emsaue (no. DE-3711-301).

history

At the end of the last ice age, glacier melt water was transported away through the Ems, and layers of sand were deposited that form the Bockholter Mountains. Until 1850, the area was an open heathland , which was almost completely reforested by around 1900. In 1939 the area was placed under nature protection and is therefore one of the oldest nature reserves in the Steinfurt district. The area is currently set out in the landscape plan of the Steinfurt district.

Execution of Polish prisoners of war

On August 14, 1942, the two Polish prisoners of war, Franciszek Banas and Waclaw Ceglewski, were hanged without a court order near the Schifffahrter Damm at kilometer stone 10 because they were believed to have had relationships with German women . The two Poles were last used as civil slave labor . The SA brought around a hundred Polish women from Greven to the crime scene, where they had to watch the execution to deter the execution. Those responsible for the murder could never be held accountable. A preliminary investigation started in the 1960s has been discontinued. The altar service of the Johannes Baptist congregation from Gimbte erected a cross and a memorial plaque at the parking lot of the Bockholter Berge in 2001.

Flora and fauna

The Bockholter Mountains are characterized by forest and sandy dunes and heathland. In the northern area along the naturally meandering Gellenbach , the area is predominantly overgrown with oak forest and partly pine forest. In the core area, in the east and in the south, mixed pine forests dominate. There are also areas with small areas of open sand and dry grassland overgrown with juniper bushes . Endangered animal species such as woodlark , kingfisher , black woodpecker and sand lizard , as well as insects such as tiger beetles and sand wasps can be found on the sandy areas .

In order to preserve the heathland and its animal and plant inventory, various maintenance measures must be carried out. Overgrown areas are cleared and deforested in order to enlarge the heather. After the vegetation has been removed, the humus topsoil is also removed to make it more difficult for vegetation to be reintroduced. The area is also grazed by Bentheim sheep, which push back the vegetation and thus keep the area open.
