The Alte Fahrt nature reserve is located in the town of Hörstel in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The area, which consists of two sub-areas, extends east of the core town of Hörstel directly on the Mittelland Canal , which passes on the southwestern edge . The state road L 501 runs to the north, the L 598 to the east and the A 30 to the south . The 24.1 hectare nature reserve Steinbruch Gravenhorst extends to the south .

For Hörstel, a 29.64 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve under the identification number ST-128 since 2013 . The area was placed under protection for the conservation, promotion and restoration of communities or biotopes of wild animal and plant species; in particular for the maintenance and development of rare and endangered plant communities of open water, typical silting complexes , nutrient-poor dry sites, succession areas and shrubbery , as well as near-natural forest stands with their adapted animal and plant species.
