The Wehrstroot nature reserve is located in the municipality of Hopsten in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The area, which consists of two sub-areas, extends north of the core town of Hopsten and south of Shell , a district of the municipality of Hopsten. The Bardelgraben flows on the southern edge of the area, and the state border with Lower Saxony runs not far to the southwest . The 138.6 hectare nature reserve Halverder Aa-Niederung extends to the east .

Since 1992, a 149.16 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Hopsten under the identification number ST-083. The area was placed under protection for the preservation, development and restoration of communities and biotopes , in particular of plants and plant communities of open water and wet and poor grassland as well as rare and z. Plant and animal species that are partly endangered, typical of the landscape, include rare, sometimes endangered waders and meadow birds , amphibians and invertebrates .
