The nature reserve wet grassland complex Ellinghorst is located in the area of the city of Rheine in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The area extends west of the core city of Rheine directly on the B 481 , which passes on the southwestern edge . The B 70 and the state border with Lower Saxony run to the west, the Ems flows to the east . Not far to the southwest extends the 10.90 hectare large and small Unland nature reserve .

Since 1998, a 7.88 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Rheine under the identification number ST-109. The area was placed under protection
- for the maintenance of a structurally rich grassland- small wood complex as the remainder of the old peasant cultural landscape and as a habitat and retreat for wild plant and animal species in a built-up and intensively used landscape and
- because of the rarity, the special character and beauty of the surface.
