The Koffituten is a 23.55 hectare nature reserve in the Hopstener district of Shell in the Tecklenburger Land ( Steinfurt district ) in Germany. It has the identifier ST-078. The Koffituten houses the last living high moor of the same name in the district area. In addition to the raised bog core measuring less than 0.5 hectares, the nature reserve includes around 20 hectares of forest, woody and grassland areas. The Koffituten is designated as a protected area in the sense of the Habitats Directive ( Natura 2000 -Nr. DE-3511-301).

The moor

The Koffitutenmoor was created about 5000 to 5500 years ago by silting up a shallow body of water. The moor has grown to a peat thickness of around 2 meters until today, but it collapsed again due to drainage measures in the middle of the 20th century. In 1991 the area of the moor and surrounding areas was placed under nature protection. It is one of the last living raised bogs in North Rhine-Westphalia . According to information received on site, the name Koffituten is derived from the coffee beans that were previously sold here in tapered bags (Low German "Koffituten"). The shape of the "Koffituten" nature reserve, which is a living miniature bog, reminded people of these coffee bags in the past.

Since the bog was drained, the formerly tree-free bog has been planted with birch and pine trees, which have pushed back the bog vegetation. With the protection of the areas by the district of Steinfurt in 1991 and the decussing of the moor area as well as the rewetting by filling in drainage ditches, the raised bog was successfully revived. Even years after the drainage had begun, there was still viable raised bog vegetation on which the regenerated bog is based today.

In the future, the intact bog area could serve as a starting point for the repopulation of degenerated raised bog areas.

Biodiversity in the bog

A large number of endangered animal and plant species that require special protection live in the Koffitutenmoor.

Special plant species that occur here are the round-leaved sundew and the crowberry .

Protected area

The protected area around the moor includes an inland dune area as well as moor forest and pine-oak forest. Large areas of grassland extend around the protected area.

Circular hiking trail

The Koffituten nature reserve is integrated into the newly created Schaler nature trail.
