The Mettinger Moor nature reserve is located in the municipality of Mettingen in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The area, which consists of two sub-areas, extends north of the core town of Mettingen and east of the core town of Recke . On the northern edge of the area runs the state border with Lower Saxony , on the eastern edge runs the state road L 796. To the south runs the L 595 and runs the Mittelland Canal . To the west is the 344.6 hectare nature reserve Recker Moor .

Since 1987, a 135.7 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Mettingen under the identification number ST-026. The area was placed under protection for the preservation, development and restoration of communities and biotopes , in particular of rare and sometimes highly endangered plant and animal species typical of the landscape in one of the last, largely peeled , former raised bog complexes in North Rhine-Westphalia and of rare, sometimes endangered Waders and meadow birds , amphibians , reptiles and invertebrates as well as plants and plant communities in open water and wet grassland .

The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary " Düsterdieker Niederung "
