The Wiechholz nature reserve is located in the municipality of Hopsten in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The area extends east of Shell , a district of Hopsten. The state border with Lower Saxony runs not far to the north and east, the state road L 593 runs to the south-west. To the south extends the 176.4 hectare nature reserve Halverder Moor .

Since 1989, a 74.88 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Hopsten under the identification number ST-063. The area has been placed under protection for conservation, promotion and development

  • as well as to restore the communities and biotopes of rare and endangered animal and plant species typical of the landscape, in particular a large, near-natural forest area from various forest communities affected by groundwater and extremely rare in this region,
