A 489.48 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Steinfurt since 1994 under the identification number ST-094. The area was placed under protection for the preservation, development and restoration of communities and habitats typical of the landscape, rare and sometimes highly endangered animal and plant species within a large, cohesive, structurally rich deciduous forest complex with its various local characteristics and age phases, as well as a large number related to the Forest of standing water bodies worthy of protection, biotopes and wet grassland areas .
