The core city of Netphen is the largest district of Netphen. The place lies at around 283 m altitude and extends in the districts of Nieder- and Obernetphen over an area of around 10.7 km². The population includes 6104 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2013).
Netphen has the Netphen primary school with its two locations in Obernetphen and Niedernetphen, a secondary school, a grammar school, the town hall and the Netphen leisure park including indoor and outdoor pools and a trampoline hall.
Sights include the Protestant Martinikirche, the simultaneous St. Peterskapelle, the Catholic parish church St. Martin and the Catholic Kreuzbergkapelle.
climate
Due to the high elevations outside the urban area, the climate in Netphen is very different. It is not uncommon for spring to be proclaimed in the town center when there is still snow on the mountains. The temperature decreases sharply with increasing altitude. This can be seen particularly well in the winter months. The temperatures between mountain and valley (difference in altitude about 400 m) sometimes fluctuate by 5 to 6 ° C. When inversion weather conditions occur, temperatures below −15 ° C are often reached. Depending on the altitude, the snow depth varies between 20 and 30 cm in the valley and up to 70 cm in the mountains.
Furthermore, the Meteo Media, Inc. a fully automatic weather station based in Netphen. On clear, windless nights, it can get very cold even in summer. Due to the basin where the cold air settles on the ground, temperatures close to 0 ° C can then be reached. That is why Netphen is often in the Meteomedia “hit list” of the coldest places with minimum temperatures in the morning. However, the temperature increases rapidly during the day, so that 25 ° C can be reached. At the height of summer, temperatures of or above 30 ° C are usually measured. With around 900 mm in the urban area and up to 1350 mm of precipitation at the Hohenroth forest house per year, agriculture is made considerably more difficult.
history
Settlement remains indicate an early settlement from around 500 BC. BC , as there are archaeological finds from the La Tène period . At that time, the Celts used the abundance of wood and ore in the region, but were driven out by the Germanic tribes who migrated south over time. During this time some fortresses of the Celts were built. B. the so-called old castle, a mountain on which most likely a Celtic refugee castle stood. In the Middle Ages , the first mentions of this Netpher region go back to the 11th century. As in most parts of the old district of Siegen , the Princely House of Nassau was named as the sovereign of Netphen. In 1215 the Lords of Hain were listed at Hainchen Castle .
In 1239, at the request of his liege, Friedrich vom Hain , Count Heinrich II the Rich of Nassau transferred the income from the Netphener parish to the Premonstratensian monastery of Stift Keppel . This is also the first written mention of Netphen. The district of Niedernetphen was first mentioned in a document in 1439.
On July 28, 1590, a lightning strike destroyed the tower of the Netphener Church.
The northeastern part of the Siegerland - the Netpherland - in particular the area around Irmgarteichen was named after Count Johann VII von Nassau-Siegen , whose will from 1621 gave the region to his eldest son Johann VIII (1583-1638) . In the years 1635-1637 the raging plague . Reports of a raid by robbery troops on Netphen are available for May 3, 1643, during which the settlement was looted and largely destroyed. In 1742 Netphen came - like all other areas north of the Lahn - to Prince Wilhelm Karl Friso of Orange , Prince of Nassau-Dietz and heir of the United Netherlands . Napoleon added the Siegerland to the Grand Duchy of Berg as part of his reorganization of Germany . However, this change was reversed in 1813 and Netphen became the property of the Orange again. In 1815 they renounced all German parts of the country and Netphen came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1816 .
On January 1, 1969, as part of the local reorganization, the large community of Netphen was created. On June 30, 1997, it achieved city status when it exceeded the 25,000 inhabitant mark . Shortly before the start of the new millennium on January 1, 2000, Netphen was officially declared a city and has the status of a middle district city .
From August 15 to 17, 2014 the 775th anniversary celebration of Netphen took place with a standing pageant. About 40,000 visitors were counted.
Telephone prefixes
It is still curious today that there are more than two telephone prefixes in Netphen . While the main town was assigned the area code 02738, the Netphen-Deuz office and the more eastern towns can be reached via the area code 02737. In some places, however, area codes of neighboring cities are used, for example Dreis-Tiefenbach can be reached via 0271 (Siegen), Unglinghausen via 02732 (Kreuztal, since 1911) and Herzhausen via 02733 (Hilchenbach). The neighboring districts of Gernsdorf, Rudersdorf and Flammersbach can be reached via the Netphen-Deuzer area code 02737, but are listed in the telephone book under Wilnsdorf. This allocation was made by the Post before the current structure of Netphens and has been preserved in the telephone network to this day. It is mainly due to the distance between the villages and the switching centers.
Religions
In Netphen as a whole there are almost as many Roman Catholic and Protestant (Reformed and Lutheran) Christians, although there are definitely differences between the individual places. There are several free churches in the city: the Christian Assembly Dreis-Tiefenbach, the Free Evangelical Community of Netphen and the Community of Deuz.

coat of arms
Blazon : “Elevated divided by blue and gold; above a growing, red-armored golden lion accompanied by seven golden shingles, below a jumping, red-tongued, black boar . " | |
Justification for the coat of arms: Above it is the Nassau lion. The jumping boar is a replica of the oldest surviving Siegerland court seal from 1467. It belonged to the "lay judges tzo Netfe ind Irmgarteichen". The symbol of Netpher has its origins in pagan Yule , where the boar was sacrificed to the gods. The right to use the coat of arms was granted to the city of Netphen in a certificate dated August 17, 1937 by the President of the Province of Westphalia . |
