Johnny "Lam" Jones ( John Wesley Jones ; born April 4, 1958 in Lawton , Oklahoma , † March 15, 2019 in Round Rock , Texas ) was an American sprinter and American football player .

In 1976 he was Olympic champion at the Olympic Games in Montreal in the 4 x 100 meter relay . The US quartet consisted of Harvey Glance , Jones, Millard Hampton and Steve Riddick . Over 100 meters , Jones, who had only been nominated as a substitute for the injured Houston McTear , came in sixth.

During his college days at the University of Texas at Austin , he also played American football in the late 1970s and was nicknamed "Lam" (after his hometown Lampasas ) during this time , as a teammate was also called Johnny Jones.

In the 1980 draft , he was selected second behind running back Billy Sims by the New York Jets . There he played as a wide receiver until 1984 . As a world-class sprinter, he was able to escape any cover player, but then had problems catching the ball. He was later placed in the top ten New York Jets Draft Busts.

Jones died in March 2019. cancer .
