About this picture

Lahr is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of southern Eifel .

geography

Lahr is idyllically situated in Notzenbachtal in the southern part of the West Eifel , about eight kilometers east of the border of Luxembourg ( Vianden ) and 40 kilometers northwest of Trier .

The Bierendorf and Windhof residential areas also belong to Lahr .

history

The place belonged to the county of Vianden in the Duchy of Luxembourg ( Quartier Vianden ) until the end of the 18th century . Lahr was the seat of a dairy .

With the occupation of the Austrian Netherlands (1794), to which the Duchy of Luxembourg belonged, by French revolutionary troops , the town became French and belonged to the Forests Department from 1795 to 1814 . Lahr was the seat of a mairie in the canton of Neuerburg . In 1815 the former Luxembourg area east of the Sauer and Our was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Thus Lahr came in 1816 to Bitburg in Trier and was the seat of the same name mayoralty to which the then independent municipality Biersdorf and the municipalities Muxerath , Nasingen , Niedergeckler and Obergeckler belonged.

After the First World War , the area belonged to the French part of the Allied occupation of the Rhineland . After the Second World War , Lahr became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone .

The chapel built in 1722 was expanded in 1816 and replaced by a new building in 1873, today's parish church.

In 1952 the people of Lahr and also Hüttinger made people sit up and take notice with the open-air play "Wilhelm Tell". It was a terrific community effort that made the community of Lahr known far beyond its home borders. The venue was almost authentic - with ponds, mountains, huts, animals, a “lake” and a “hollow alley”. Tellplatz is the name of the terrain with “Tellhütte” today. The crossbow in the coat of arms of the local community Lahr commemorates this event. The reconstruction of the parish church, which was badly damaged in the Second World War, was largely financed from the proceeds of the Tell Festival.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Lahr
Blazon : "Under a golden shield head, in it blue wavy bar, divided from red to silver obliquely to the left, from the obliquely left silver crossbow, behind three obliquely left notched paw crosses with red stakes and blue bars."
Justification for the coat of arms: The meandering course of the Lahrer Bach, which is called Geckler Bach in the upper course and Notzenbach in the lower course, is decisive in the Lahrer Grund. Not only the visible water, but also the huge amount of water in the near-surface layers of the earth are a determining factor in the district. Numerous spring and collection points and water protection zones characterize the valley and require consideration. In the head of the shield of the coat of arms, the gold illustrates the abundance of water and the wavy band in blue underlines the valuable, the "gold treasure" - and of course the course of the stream. The silver crossbow is located in the upper right corner of the field, which is divided diagonally to the left, and refers to a village event in 1952 with the open-air stage play "Wilhelm Tell". The coat of arms team has also adopted the crossbow - model of the music club - in the turn to the coat of arms heart. At the bottom left there are three trinitarian crosses in red and blue arranged diagonally on silver. Our source study has shown that the parish of the Cross in Lahr goes back to the Trinitarians in Vianden / L. (Together with Mettendorf). A cross for the then Lahr, another cross for today's parish (with the kerygmatic change of cross to the elevation of the cross) and the third cross for the station path behind the parsonage, which is known from the past and home history.
