Let It Shine was a television music competition with the aim of finding and training five previously undiscovered potential leading men for a new West End musical. It was the sixth broadcast in a series of West End casting shows on the BBC . It began broadcasting on BBC One on January 7, 2017 .
The winner of the casting show was the boy band Five to Five , which was put together there ; they began theater rehearsals immediately after the broadcast and have been a touring ensemble on various stages in England since September 2017 and then for at least one season in London's West End in the leading roles of new jukebox musicals The Band by Take Thats Gary Barlow OBE and Tim Firth .
background
Previous seasons
Before Let It Shine , the BBC broadcast five more seasons of the West End Casting Show format, each time leading actors were sought for the staging of a musical in London's West End (theater district in the center of the English capital):
- How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? (2006, Musical The Sound of Music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein ; Leading Lady Maria wanted)
- Any Dream Will Do (2007, Musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice ; Leading Man Joseph wanted)
- I'd Do Anything (2008, musical Oliver! By Lionel Bart ; Leading Lady Nancy and three child actors Oliver wanted)
- Over the Rainbow (2010, musical Der Zauberer von Oz by Harold Arlen and EY Harburg , Leading Lady Dorothy and dog Toto wanted)
- Superstar (2012, musical Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice; Leading Man Jesus wanted)
- Let It Shine (2017, jukebox musical The Band by Gary Barlow / Take That and Tim Firth; five Leading Men wanted)
title
The show's title is taken from Take Thats single "Shine" (2007). The expression literally means “Let it shine”, in a sense “Show what you can!” / “Don't hide your talents” and is comparable to the German idiom of biblical origin “ Don't put your light under a bushel ”.
Announcement and Marketing
With a self-deprecating appearance, Barlow first drew media attention to his new musical and the start of the application period for Let It Shine in the spring of 2016 : On May 30, 2016, a public holiday in the United Kingdom, he was hiding under a fan mask of his own face the lively Cabot Circus shopping center in Bristol and sat on the public wing, which is accessible to all passers-by. After a few introductory chords, he took off his mask and after singing several take-that songs, he took time for autographs and photos with several hundred astonished passers-by. A large number of cell phone videos of the surprise appearance appeared on the Internet on the same day and various newspapers became aware of the event. It was not until June 17, 2016 that the BBC published another video on its YouTube channel with recordings of the surprise concert and short interview excerpts with Barlow as well as the announcement of his new show.
During an appearance on Alan Carr's talk show Chatty Man in December 2016, Barlow, Minogue and Kemp confirmed the BBC show would air on January 7, 2017, in competition with the concurrent premiere of The Voice UK's sixth season on ITV . A Sneek peak (short excerpt) of an applicant's audition was also shown, which was then used to explain the format and selection rounds of the casting.
The season was also broadcast on Australian television via the BBC's international subsidiary, BBC UKTV , from January 22, 2017.
musical
The jukebox musical entitled The Band was written by dramaturge Tim Firth ( The Girls - West End 2016/17) and composer Gary Barlow ( Finding Neverland - Broadway 2015/16; The Girls ). As in jukebox musicals (e.g. Mamma Mia ! , I've never been to New York ), the plot is constructed around existing songs by an artist, here Barlow's band Take That . However, it is independent of the real history of the band, in the application process it was expressly stated that no doppelgangers or imitators of the original band members would be sought.
format
The show was presented by Mel Giedroyc and Graham Norton , the latter had previously hosted four more of the West End casting shows. Main judges were Gary Barlow , Dannii Minogue and Martin Kemp. They were supported by various guest judges, who each accompanied a section of the selection process: Amber Riley was present on the first programs in which the applicants auditioned individually; followed by Lulu , who sat at the judges' table in the group round. Ricki Lake was present for the first live show, she was replaced in the semifinals by Ashley Roberts , in the final Peter Kay was there. Backstage, Take Thats Mark Owen and Howard Donald also provided advice and assistance to the candidates in most of the episodes . The program was developed and produced by Gary Barlow, Executive Producer ( executive producer ) was Andrew Cartmell. Guy Freeman was responsible for editing and BBC Studios was the sole production company . The ten episodes of the season were broadcast in a 16: 9 aspect ratio and with lengths between 30 and 105 minutes and formed the Saturday evening program of their main channel BBC One between January 7 and February 25, 2017 .
The competition was held in three rounds:
- The Starway ( Auditions )
- The Collaborations (group round)
- The Battle of the Bands (live shows)
Busted , Beverley Knight , Melanie C , Olly Murs and Kaiser Chiefs worked in round two of the selection process with one of the groups formed there and performed together with them, this was recorded in November 2016 at MediaCityUK in Salford .
The expert panel
The judges group is known as the Expert Panel at the West End Casting Shows . In terms of composition, the aim is to achieve a combination of the key decision-makers in (musical) theater, i. H. Guarantee producers, directors and composers, as well as experienced actors as mentors for the applicants. Therefore, the jury grouping for this seventh season looks like this:
- Gary Barlow (born 1971) - composer and producer; also 35 years of own stage experience as a pianist and singer - all episodes
- Martin Kemp (born 1961) - actor, musician (bassist) and director; 45 years of professional experience (stage and television) - all episodes
- Dannii Minogue (* 1971) - actress, singer, model; 38 years of professional experience (stage and television) - all episodes
- Amber Riley (* 1986) - Leading Lady (actress / singer); 15 years of professional experience (stage and television) - first round
- Lulu (born 1948) - singer, actress; 53 years of professional experience (stage and television) - second round
- Ricki Lake (* 1968) - actress, producer, presenter; 30 years of professional experience (film and television) - quarter-finals
- Ashley Roberts (born 1981) - choreographer, Triple Threat (singer / actress / dancer), model; 16 years of work experience - semi-finals
- Peter Kay (* 1973) - stand-up comedian and actor; 21 years of professional experience (stage, film and television) - final
In contrast to the previous seasons of the West End casting shows, the search was not for a single leading man or a leading couple, but for a group of five leading men with equal rights who should form a boy band together. Establishing such group dynamics and even friendship among five previously unfamiliar young men and maintaining it for many months - with constant living together in a confined space and at least eight appearances per week - brings with it separate difficulties. Another criterion for the selection of judges was therefore the stage experience in a band, which is given with Barlow ( Take That since 1989), Kemp ( Spandau Ballet since 1976) and Roberts ( The Pussycat Dolls 2003-2010).
course
Round 1: The Starway
Each jury member awarded up to five stars after each appearance, in the style of traditional newspaper reviews. Each participant could receive up to 20 stars in this way, for entry into the second round of the selection process the achievement of at least 15 stars was a prerequisite. No member of the jury was informed of each other's judgment in advance, and there was no consultation phase. The Starway (dt. Sternenweg ) designated a connecting web between the main stage and a small increase with the judge table. The first 14 stars lit up on this jetty, and after his performance the respective singer stood on the 15th star in the front part of the main stage, accompanied by Graham Norton. The remaining five stars were distributed behind the applicant on the main stage. After the appearance, there was initially a short constructive feedback from one or more jurors on the respective appearance, mostly linked to suggestions for future improvement. Afterwards the awarded stars were lit one after the other, only afterwards the individual ratings were displayed at the place of the respective judge.
Note: After the song titles, the name of the singer of the most famous versions is given in brackets for better classification. This is not infrequently different from the composer of the corresponding piece.

Group 1 was christened “Five to Five”, Group 2 “Iron Sun”, Group 3 “Neon Panda”, Group 4 was named “Drive” and Group 5 was named “Nightfall”. Each boy group prepared a set together, then the individual performances within the groups were rated; three members were eliminated from each of the eight-member groups in this episode.
