Maximilian or (more rarely) Maximillian is a male given name. The short form is Max .

Origin, meaning and historical distribution

The name Maximilian comes from the Latin and goes back to the name Maximilianus, a not fully understood extension of Maximus meaning "the greatest".

Several Christian saints bear the name Maximilian, including Maximilianus of Numidia , Maximilian of Celeia and Maximilian Kolbe .

Maximilian was particularly popular in the Danube region in the early modern period, especially since it occurs more frequently with the Habsburgs and Wittelsbachers .

Today's distribution

In 2016, the name took third place in Germany in the frequency statistics of the most popular first names. In the USA, the short form Max is not relevant for the newly assigned first names in 2018 in 136th place, Maximilian in 448th place and Maximillian not relevant.
