history
The name of the place suggests a Frankish settlement. The first documentary mention comes from 832 in the Golden Book of Echternach Abbey . There Mettendorf is listed under the name Machconvillare . Other names exist with metendorph (1063), mectindorf (1345), villa metendorp (1360), mettendoirff (1451), meittendorf (1563) and Mettendorf (since 1621).
Initially, the place belonged to the Prüm Abbey before it came to the Luxembourgish county of Vianden in 1220 . Here Mettendorf was the seat of a lay judge and the main place of a dairy . Count Heinrich I von Vianden handed the place over in 1248 to the Trinitarian order who had been brought into the country , who also had a two-aisled church built in 1477 according to Vianden's model. After the annexation of the Austrian Netherlands , to which Luxembourg belonged, by French revolutionary troops , the place became French in 1795 and belonged to the forest department . In 1815 he was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . After the First World War temporarily occupied by the French again , the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .
In 1815 Mettendorf had 753 inhabitants and was still divided into lower, middle and upper village. These parts have long grown together. The church is still the center of the place today.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In the split shield in front a silver bar in red, behind in silver a blue-red divided Maltese cross." | |
Justification of the coat of arms: Mettendorf was sheltered in 1222 according to the property register of the Prüm Abbey. Their patronage rights were owned by the departmental steward of the Count of Vianden (Luxembourg). The Counts of Vianden had a white bar in red. The patronage passed from the Counts of Vianden to the Trinitarians of Vianden in 1248. According to the Luxembourg State Archives, the Trinitarians have a blue-red divided Maltese cross as their coat of arms. |
